CIEE Local Coordinators make a difference in their communities by offering families the opportunity to host international high school students from over 55 countries! By developing relationships with schools, host families and students, Local Coordinators help to ensure that the experience is a success for everyone.
What makes a CIEE Local Coordinator
CIEE's Local Coordinators are fun loving, responsible adults who are active in their communities, enjoy teenagers, have patience, excellent communication skills, and maturity.
The benefits of being a Local Coordinator
The Local Coordinator position is a role that gives you great flexibility as you decide the level of commitment by the number of students you choose to mentor and how much time to devote. Many of our coordinators have full time jobs, are stay at home moms and dads, or are retired. Our local coordinators receive a small compensation and unique travel opportunities within the U.S., as well as internationally, that allow you to meet and develop relationships with other Local Coordinators across the U.S.
The highlight for every CIEE Local Coordinator is our yearly International Conference. Local Coordinators that qualify through a certain amount of student placements will be invited to attend this conference. CIEE pays for transportation, lodging, fun tours and activities, as well as most of the meals. Each year we choose a different destination. In the past years we have traveled to Dublin, Rome, and Rio de Janeiro, and 2009 will find us in Munich, Germany!
As a Local Coordinator you:
Get to know students from many countries and help welcome them to your hometown
Experience the joys and rewards of being a cultural ambassador
Expand your relationships in your community.
Strengthen ties with neighbors, friends, and civic and religious groups
Be an integral part of a life-changing experience that host families and students will never forget
Earn national and international travel
Local Coordinators are responsible for recruiting and screening Host Families. They conduct host family interviews, reference checks, and aid in the selection of a student for the host family. Local Coordinators act as a liaison to local high schools and assist in the enrollment of the students.
Throughout the year, Local Coordinators are responsible for the supervision of students, including monthly contact with the students and bi-monthly home visits with the students and their host family, as well as continued contact with the local high school.
As a Local Coordinator you:
Recruit host families in your spare time
Match students with host families
Provide guidance to students and host families throughout the experience
Receive extra money for placing and checking on student
Earn national and international travel
*We pay $550 per student placed (which includes supervision).*
CIEE has specific qualifications that international students must meet before they are accepted into our program.
These standards are as follows:
Must be between the ages of 15 and 18.5 at the start of the program
Actively enrolled in high school in their home country
Cannot have failed a year of school or English in the past three years
Have studied at least 3 years of English and possess basic practical skills in written and spoken English
Demonstrate the proper motivation and maturity to participate in the USA High School Program
Apply Now
After completing our Online Application, CIEE will contact you to conduct an interview, including reference checks and a criminal background check. The criminal background check is required as Local Coordinators work closely with teenagers.
If you are selected to be a CIEE Local Coordinator, you will receive training provided by your Regional Director. This training will either be in person or over the phone, dependent on availability. Further training meetings will be provided throughout the year and at our Annual National Meeting in the fall.
CIEE looks forward to hearing from you!

Hi moms!
I am still fairly new to Cafemom but so far I love it!
I would like to tell you about the organization that my husband and I have co-founded called It Starts With the Family. The goal of our organization is to begin to rebuild America by strengthening her cornerstone - the family. We have launched our site recently: www.startswiththefamily.org. The site is an extension of the organization and provides information and resources for the family unit as a whole as well as each individual family member in each season of life.
We have recently added a discussion forum and poetry/short story submissions exclusively for teens ages 13-18. In the not-so-distant future, there will be contests and prizes, too! Please feel free to send your teen our way. We are not another MySpace or Facebook. We want kids to talk about truly important things that are happening in their lives, not just how to decorate their pages.
Please feel free to message me here through Cafemom or email me at melanie@startswiththefamily.org.
Regards,
Melanie VanNuys
