Welcome to our group! I hope that this post will answer any beginning questions that you may have.

First of all, you need a program to scrapbook with. My favorite is Photoshop Elements 6. The cost is just under $100. A lot of other scrappers and designers have Photoshop CS2 which is much more expensive. Both great programs. You can get  a 30 day free trial at http://www.adobe.com

Another popular one is Paint Shop Pro. I had this on my computer at one time. It is a great program, the biggest reason why I switched to Photoshop is because I found the most tutorials and compatability with Photoshop. They also have a free 30 day trial at http://www.corel.com/servlet/Satellite/us/en/Content/1152796555406

I know there are other ones similar to these two. Ulead is one of them but I don't know much about it.

Then there are programs that come with premade templates, papers and embellishments. Scrapbook Max and Memory Mixer are just a couple that I am familiar with the most. Memory Mixer has awesome papers and elements and is very easy to use. Most of them you can import other kits that you have saved on your computer. I couldn't find a free trial on Memory Mixer but there is one for Scrapbook Max and http://www.scrapbookmax.com

Heritage Makers has a program right on there website. You can use it for free or pay a monthly fee to have access to 100's of kits from ScrapGirls(which is one of my favorite sites) They turn your pages into books, cards and posters. I have recently joined with this company but I am still learning the specifics of the business side of it. If you have any interest in this Channon Z, one of our group members can answer all questions you might have.

So now you have a program that you like. Now it's time to start collecting some kits and templates. With all the freebies out there you could digital scrapbook without buying anything. Although I still manage to buy stuff here and there.
Start with our very talented HappyScrapGirl at her blog, http://happyscrapgirl.blogspot.com for a list of freebies.

  • I had no clue that all those kits were available free.  I wondered how everyone got the great "embelishments" they used.  Thank you for the tip.  I thought I had to spend a fortune on new graphics..meanwhile here is all this stuff that works with my programs ... FREE!

  • There are tons of great digital scrapbooking sites out there where you can find tuturials, ask questions, download free kits/elements/alphas/fonts/papers/etc, download kits/elements/alphas/fonts/papers/etc for a minimal charge, and more. Check out a few of my favorites:

    www.DigitalScrapbookPlace.com

    www.Matterofscrap.com

    www.scrapbook-bytes.com

    www.ShabbyPrincess.com

I used to have a bunch more great sites that I visited all the time saved to my favorites. However, I recently had my hard drive crash, and when it did I lost ALL of my favorites. :( And, sadly, because it had been so long since I was actively scrapbooking, I couldn't remember the vast majority of the sites. So, as I continue to rediscover them, I will be sure to share. In the meantime, check out the above links. My all time fav is the first link, DSP.

Oh, and I do all my scrapbooking in PaintShopPro 7. It's a pretty easy program to work with, once you get the hang of everything.

  • I used to scrapbook heavily a few years back.  It's an enjoyable hobby, but quite time consuming, & I've done dozens of pages and have felt people dont seem to enjoy my works as much as myself.   I've resorted to doing memory books of the year recapping personal events through photos, short who what where when & highlights of the event, major news of the year, what was popular like movies music and etc, and my personal reflection of the year.  I've noticed its something that others seem to be more interested in checking out and I like looking back at a whole years recapp than numerous pages in several folders/albums.  Also just doesnt take as much time ^^.  But looking into digital scrapping since it cutts out a lot of the prepping.  Thanks for the heads up on how to get started =)

    Past things I've scrapped:

  • Does anyone know any good Mac based systems? I do have photoshop thanks to DH. I just have a hard time starting anything creatively. I'm trying to do a lifebook for my son for his adoption. Anyone have any tips if they have done one of those? I just got signed up with adoptionlifebooks.

    Thanks.

  • I use paint.net to do my pages and then download them onto a shutterfly album.  I really like plain and simple pages.  Here are some of the ones I have done recently.  I like using paint.net b.c It gives me more freedom than other programs.  These are both 12 by 12 pages on white paper.
