I'm brand new, and don't want to spend a ton of money, but doesn't have to be free.
So what do I need to get started? An editing program and start with free layouts?
Or a certain digital scrapbooking program?
All advice is appreciated! I'd like to make my own birthday invitations, christmas cards, and pages to print and frame. Can anyone steer me in the right direction?
I bought scrapbook factory Delux from bestbuy for $40. I had the basic program from walmart for $10, but I don't think they have it anymore. Either way they are a great place to be able to buld and have lots of stuff. Had the program for YEARS before I discovered all the stuff you can get off line. THere are TONS of sites that give away free scrapbooking stuff...I just google. ANd when you download it you can use it with the program. You just open a broject then go grab the stuff you uploaded from whatever file you saved it in! PM me if you have any more Q's!

I love Creative Memories Storybook Creator Plus. You can create ANYTHING with it, the designs are beautiful (and new ones are added monthly!), there are free tutorials & webinars, and a toll free technical support phone number.
There's a free version you can try out, but the upgraded version is on sale this month.
I would not start with anything else but Photoshop Elements. You can get older versions on the internet for around $25 (I got PSE5 for $23 about 6 months ago, now they have a new version out and it may be even cheaper). Full retail is only around $99, and sometimes you can buy a new printer and it comes free! (If you need a printer, ask at your local store if anything comes bundled with PSE).
You're smart not to get stuck on free - for the price of 4 digi-kits you can have a version of the photographic community's flagshiip program. There are tons of free brushes, other pre-sets, plug-ins, tutorials, etc for PSE whereas not so many for the smaller specialty programs. Look at the digital scrapbooking magazines - tutorials are almost ALWAYS done in PSE, if not then they use PSP (Corel's Paint Shop Pro). I don't recommend PSP for the same reasons - I see lots of people in my classes that start with PSP then face the painful process of re-learning everything they know when they realize that the PS programs are state-of-the-art for digital image manipulation.
You can download a 30 day free trial through my newbie page so you can see if this is something you'd like to do - there is a tutorial there that will walk you through your first layout and a couple of sampler kits to get you started! Good luck, can't wait to see what you produce!
This is the software that won the "Readers Choice" award in Creating Keepsakes last year...
