I'm Peg, a 48 year old mom of 2. My daughter is 26 and is NT and my son is 17 and is dx with Asperger or High Functioning Autism (depending on what dx your talking about) and ADHD. He is enrolled in a Charter School that allows me to mix classroom and home school. He is starting his junior year. He is also very involved with Boy Scouts and is working to get his Eagle Scout this year. He's a terrific kid with a very good sense of humor.

  • Hi, i'm Irene ; I have an 11 yo dtr previously dx'd with Pdd-nos; now going through puberty; I was hoping to touch base with other moms who are going thru the teen years; we have a somewhat unique problem; my dtr has completely turned against me, stopped calling me mom, avoids eye contact with me, doesn't want to spend time with me.  It is heartbreaking as we were very close before. she is very high functioning, attends regular school; but suddenly has an increase in ocd features; has anyone expereienced or heard of anything like this?  Even the "professionals" are stumped; she presents to others as a typical child and they sort of look at me like I must be crazy!!! Any advice would be welcome. Thanks to all.

  • Hello.  I have a 14 yo son with asperger's and am looking forward to being a part of this group to discuss the issues we will be facing.  He begins 9th grade in the fall.

Honcon- So sorry about your daughter.  I wish I had some answers for you...I have a  daughter who is 12 and she is alot more high maintanence than my son and she has no disability.  Her emotions are on a roller coaster. I imagine your daughter may be the same way but has the added burdon of asperger's making it hard for her to relate when it's already hard for girls.  I'll try to think of some ideas for you.

  • My name is Angie.  I have a 15 yo son entering high school in a few weeks....scared to death of this new adventure in his life because kids can be so cruel!  I also have a 12 yo son who has some AS tendencies but not enough for a diagnosis.  Both of my kids are great and dh and I wouldn't trade them in for the world!

  • I'm Christina......I'm 37 yrs old and I am the divorced mother of a wonderful 13 1/2 y.o. boy with autism.  He is going through puberty now, which has thrown alot of things out of whack for us.  Changing medication is the primary thing we're dealing with now.  He has alot of self-stimulating behaviors, is moderately verbal and is extremely affectionate and loving.  I'm so glad I found this group and I look forward to sharing experiences with others in the same boat as me.

  • HI

My name is Holle and I have a 15 year old son with autism. High school is a total challenge, not because of him but because the Paradise school district .

As a parent, I've become a totally different person..for the good...because of all the challenges we face together.  My son has his continuing challenges but WOW...has he come a long way and is as special and dear as can be. What does the future hold? I don't know as he has developed a really bad temper and when he loses is....RUN.  My goal is to keep him at home with me, but after the last blow up....it may not be possible. My depression is overwhelming as I write this......but I've overcome worse!

I hope to have the opportunity to build positive relationships here and to offer support to others!

  • Hi, my name is Lynne and I have two sons, a 14 year old with Aspergers and a 10 year old.  And  my 10 year old is more problems than the 14 year old at most times.  Alek (the 14yo) is also starting high school in two weeks.  I would just like to die and if it wasn't for the fact that I am a single mom, I would home school the child.  I'm just happy that for the first time in 14 years he has made a "real" friend who likes him for what he is.  But it has put stress on Alek because he has learned to control his flapping and stimming behaviors for short times and if he can't do it after a few hours he gets frustrated.  He knows it is not something other kids do and tries to hide it.

Anyway, I'm real glad I found this site.

  • Hi, I'm Denise a married (19 years), 38 yo. mother of two. My daughter is 17 and is a "typical" teenager and my son is 13 and was dx'd PDD at age 3.  He also struggles w/ ADHD & panic disorder.  He is mainstreamed w/ a one on one and just starting receiving some outside assistance at home.  He has also hit puberty (which is frightening).  He is very loving and smart young man who sometimes still stuggles with social interactions and being a little defiant.  Am looking forward to talking and sharing with other moms.  Please contact me anytime.

  • Hi, I'm 49.  I have two sons  Kevin is 19 years old dx with PDD-NOS.  Chris is 16 years old dx with Asperger's.  They are very different from each other but generally get along with each other better than a lot of sibs.  I have a hubby, Allen who has a degree in physics.  Physicist may be a sub-category of Autism; the jury's still out on that one.

Kevin graduated from high school in May.  We are still looking for an adult program for him.  Chris is in 11th grade.  He is going to a tech school to get a computer programming certificate.  I think he will be able to go to college after high school.

Kevin loves anime, conspiracy theories and horror films.  Chris loves his computer!

I just started taking an accounting class at the community college here.  I have 2 1/2 years towards a secondary ed. math degree, but have decided not to teach.  I hope to become a benefits planner and help people set up special needs trusts, etc.

    Karen
