Any teens been dxed with a asd and Mild cerebral palsy?

• Hi,

       My son , and many in the autism program at his school, exhibit those symptoms that you've described.

       We've been told that Ataxia and low muscle tone, is part of the ASD package.  

       It's a symptom consisting of incoordination of  muscle movements.    Our son worked with an OT to help with these things, in addition to handwriting, cutting meat, tying shoes, etc.  When he was younger he needed help climbing the ladder to go down slides, as well as things as simple as learning how to jump.

• Hi. My daughter, now 18, has been dxed with Aspergers and NLD, both of which include lack of coordination, visual difficulties like inability to judge distances, no sense of direction, etc. etc. She also had OT which seemed to help, but she hated it and finally quit.  She still suffers from those problems, and the fact that your son even played soccer is miraculous to me.  I do know a girl from school who had mild CP plus Aspergers/Nld.  But it sounds like he's much more likely affected by ASD than CP.

• Ouch, that question hit a note and led to a very dangerous situation with my son.  There was an assumption made by his pediatrician that he might have a mild CP that would explain some tightness or hypertonicity of tendons in his leg. 

  A serious and life threatening reaction to anesthesia during an ear surgery and some mixed up dx's (over years) later and we have finally come to a definitive dx through genetic testing of Becker's Muscular Dystrophy.

  If I go over his medical history there were signs all along the way that were missed, I am adopted so we are pretty devastated by the recent 99.9% sure dx.  It not only affects my son, but my daughter may be a carrier (x-linked, it's a 50% chance)...I am definately a carrier. 

  I wish I could say he is fine, and I suppose relatively he is, but he is already having some mild heart problems and cannot run or play without serious issues.  I'm glad though that he is able to get around walking well and I hope that he will for some time to come.  Guess we all know that our ASD kids are some amazing beings and he, so far, has accepted what is happening so very well and I love him even more for his attitude.  I hope it sticks, as I am watching his ideals slowly erode as he is becoming more aware of the world.

  I was suprised to see a strong link in research between kids with Duchenne's and Becker's with ASD, one study cited out of 150 or so kids, 6 were affected, 6 in 150! 

  I am in no way suggesting that this is what is going on with your son, just telling you our story and saying to check out all you can with your pediatrician before accepting a maybe
