My son has the mitchells and they have worked great for us.  My son didn't have to have the tendotomy so I can't help with that part.  How has he been doing today?

I'm not sure...my son had his casts on for 3 weeks after his tendon cut.  There wasn't any bruising and he barely noticed the brace when it was put on.  He had both feet done and really all we noticed was skin peeling as a side effect.  Did your baby have the same treatment?  Or did they cut the tendon and put the brace on sooner than they did with ours?

He had the surgery then he went straight into the Cast for 3.5 weeks and the right into the braces. He been in them for almost three months Dec. 18th we go back to the Doc and he said as long as his feet look as they did the last time we went to Doc he will be able to wear them at night and naps only... I sooo excited cause he will learn to walk finally. Hes 17 months old and he wants to walk but the bar stops him from that. He doesnt even the braces are on now (thank God)

thanks for your responce!!!

My son is having the tendon precudure done next week but they may just cut all of his tendons at once in his foot because he has a major clubfoot that can only be corrected by cutting every tendon in his foot.. But he was sized for his brace today and its the ponseiti brace

Ashley,

I am concerned that the doctors are telling you that your son needs major surgery to correct his clubfoot.  Even with difficult cases that are complicated by syndromes, it is not common for a child to need major surgery any more if they are being treated by someone with experience.

The doctors at the University of Iowa haven't conducted major releases like you're describing in over 10 years, and they treat the most difficult of cases.  If you are curious about getting a second opinion, you can email Dr. Morcuende and he will discuss the treatment plans with you (or call him).

I know you've been researching and know what the standard protocols are.  If you have any doubt at all about your son's doctors' skills/recommendations, I'd encourage you to at least consider talking to Dr. M about it before going ahead with the surgery.

Good luck and best wishes-

Jenny

I just thought of something else.  I know a mom who just went through the exact same thing.  Her doctor (who is very well known and reputable) told her that her son needed to have extensive surgery (he'd been treating him since birth and was never able to get full correction, even after a tenotomy and additional casting).

She took her baby to Iowa City  in February and Dr. Morcuende was able to correct his feet with just casts and he didn't need a second tenotomy either.

I can put you in touch with her if you'd like to discuss what they went through.

Alex had a Dennis-Brown Bar for a while (the white shoes that screw on to a bar that keeps them rotated at a certain angle) and it was murder...he had bruising and a concurrent bad attitude. I wasn't much better. After his last surgery, The put him in AFO's (a brace that pretty much casts the foot up to the top of the calf) that he could walk in. We bought sandals and strapped them around the AFO b/c you were supposed to put them in a shoe (haha). After a little suggestion, they put a sole and tread right on the foot of the brace and wa-la! Alex started walking.....

...I remember that bar to this day...we ended up leaving the shoes on all the time so he'd eventually get used to them...then, at night, after he was sleeping we'd screw them on to the bar. You have to be VERY sneaky! He'd wake up in the a.m. and be ok in the bar until about 10 am. We then took the bar off until he slept for the night. As long as he was in them a certain amount of time, we were ok. We also figured out it was easier for him to sleep with the bar on if we slept him in his car seat.

Hi there-

I am dealing with something similar.  My son had the heel cord procedure 6 weeks ago,and was fitted with the Markell shoes and  Browne bar.  He HATES them .  I have been doing a little research, and there are a couple of websites you should visit:  www.mdortopaedics.com, and www.dobbsbrace.com.  I feel that either of these will be a much better alternative to what he has now.  Both are more expensive, but maybe you can work something out through your insurance co.  Hope this helps!
