Hello everyone...we are about to go for our 2nd casting. We are doing the Ponsetti correction method. The doctor said that after the castings are finished they will do a procedure where the snip the achilles tendon. Anyone had this done?
Yep... tis a normal part of treatment for most kiddos. My son didn't need it either but if I remember correctly about 90% or so of babies do... From what I hear, it's done in the normal office and heals while the baby is in the cast... pretty easy little procedure...esp. vs a major surgery! A lot of people refer to it as the heel cord release on here.
Quoting Winter711:Most of the kids being corrected with the Ponsetti method have the tedon release done. It is part of the protocol. My son did not need to have it done. It depends on the amount flexibility they have in the foot, I forget the technical term.

I do believe that local numbing is used. From what I have heard they put another cast on after the heal cord release that stays on longer than the other casts. Then they will go into the brace. I wish I could be more helpful. There is another group on yahoo that alot of people belong to and I know that more people there will be able to answer your questions better than I. Here is the link
My son has to have a major procedure done on him they have to cut every tendon in his foot because of his mobious syndrom........ which is where his 6th and 7th cranial nerve didnt form all the way
the baby is put under its a quick sergery they put another cast on afterwards for the pain they give you tylenol afterwards my daughter wasnt in much pain

do they numb it first? is it a painful recovery?
My son had clubfoot, both feet. They did the tendon cut using a scalpel and he did cry. They bandaged it and put the casts back on. He was no fussier afterwards than he was during the original castings. Tylenol was helpful for fussiness. Now is feet appear perfect. Nice and straight and don't seem to trouble him at all. He's nine months old and learning as of yesterday to pull himself up!
Although my son was put under for this procedure, most babies have it done totally awake and in the clinic. They numb it, it takes mere minutes and then they are casted like usual.

My son had the procedure done in the docs office the 1st time but I was NOT happy with that the Doc was wayyyyyy rude and didn't seem to care on how he was torturing my son.... He did it in office and he didn't even give him a local he just sprayed on numbing spray... wasn't happy at all... As for the New Doc I LOVE HIM he is the BEST Doc in the world well as far as I think. We had the procedure done again but it was in The Hospital and they did put him under and man, it was the scariest time in my life and I don't wanna go through that again so I am sooo on top of keeping the braces on Thank GOD we go to the Doc's on 12/18/08 so he can take a look and then we will be only at nights and naps for the braces!!! Wear are you at (state)? If you have any otherquestions please feel free to email me......OH yeah as for the Pain the 1st time he had it done he didnt sleep for a week litterly but the 2nd time in the Hospital it was a much better experience he got liquid lour tab. I didnt give him that after the 2nd day cause I didnt like how groggy he was so Tylenol and Motrin was after the matter...
Thanks,
Josie and my lil man Jake
Make sure you check with your doctor on exactly what they do, at the time my daughter had the tendon release, we were completely clueless about all of this stuff, and he did not use any kind of numbing anesthesia or anything. He just told us to give her the little bit of tylenol she could have before showing up and then a few hours after they did it. It was horrible, and we found out later on at a physical therapists office that they should of done some sort of numbing on the ankles at least. Think that was the most heart crushing day, finding out that we put our 6 week old daughter through hell, when it could of been alot easier on her. So just check with the docs and see what their methods are, everyone is different.
