Fossil fuels are finite. Someday we will no longer be able to mine the earth for as much oil, natural gas and coal as we once did. Oil is special because it is a liquid fuel: stable and easily transportable. 40% of US energy comes from oil, but it is just as important as a feedstock for all sorts of products, from plastics to pharmaceuticals to food on grocery store shelves. No alternative liquid fuel is available to replace oil in scale, ease and price.
Peak Oil isn't about oil "running out." A well's production increases until it reaches a maximum barrels-per-day, and then it begins to decrease from that maximum. On a graph it looks like a bell-shaped curve. Just as the curve applies to one well, it also applies to the entire world's production. At the same time, world demand for oil grows at an unprecedented rate. There is no way to know beforehand when Peak will occur but it can only be seen "in the rearview mirror." It could be 2037 or it could be last year. For a more in-depth explanation see the sticky: "What is Peak Oil?"
This is a group for moms who are concerned or curious about Peak Oil and its effects on themselves, their families and their communities. Let's talk about subjects like: living car-free, buying or producing more products locally, living on less energy, current events in oil-exporting countries etc.
