So we finaly after so much stress got the final word from the Army and they are moving me and my kids up before my hubby deploys. We are getting everything ready to go now and are flying up around the 20th. I am going to need some mommy friends so if anyone is up for playdates, coffee anything let me know because Im so nevous to move to Alaska. Im so stressed because we already had to say goodbye to my husband once thinking he was leaving in may and now my son is going to have to do it again and he is already having such a hard time :( I also have to inrole him in kindergarden so any help on that would be amazing!! Anyway let me know if there is any chance of a playdate toward the end of the month.
Hi and welcome! :) I'm Amber. Do you know if you will be in post housing, or live off post? We bought our first house with the VA loan here. I think where you register your son for kindergarten depends on where you end up living. I don't know anything about the on post schools here, but I just registered my daughter for kindergarten at Anne Wein Elementary. Pretty sure you should be able to register still without any problem.
Crystal, I totally know the stresses of military life! Though my hubby isn't military, my dad was and he spent a lot of time at sea when I was younger and we moved around a lot. I remember how stressful that was for my mom and me. Just hug your little guy lots and lots.
When I moved up here last year, I actually moved without my husband too and it seemed like forever that I was here by myself. But, you're coming at Alaska at an awesome time of year and it really is a beautiful place with cool people. Everyone has always been friendly to me and offered advice on "Alaskan" things that I had NO clue about coming from the Lower 48 (like plugging in your car!).
I work full time during the week, but my husband works weekends, so the baby and I are home by ourselves. We'd love to hang out :) Send me a message or something when you get here!
Im so glad that people on cafe mom are so supportive Im not sure what I would do without moms who are already in the situation to kind of lean on! Anyway I will message you when I get there and maybe we can try to meet up somewhere. I have a gps but have never been there so you may be giving me lots of directions :) Talk to you in a few weeks
Crystal

Hi Crystal,
Yes my husband is in the army, and he is getting deployed very soon too (our first time dealing with it). Yes, you getting here in the summer should definitely make your transition easier! I'm still a newbie in this area since we got here in the beginning of March, but if there is any way I can help you out after you get here or you want to hang out, just let me know. :) Oh, you mentioned GPS.... do you have one that has maps specifically for Alaska? We have one, that only came with maps for the lower 48. So I am having to play the whole mapquest game. :) I have to say though, that it is really easy to get around here once you get acquainted with the main roads!

Well, like I said, it's pretty easy to get around here. There are only a few main roads! We just came from the DC area so it's a huge change. No, we live off base. We bought our first house, in Walden Estates. Hopefully you are able to get into some of the newer, nice housing on post! The few I've been in have been really nice looking.

I think our neighborhood is about a 10 minute drive from the Trainer Gate.... mostly because of stoplights. Before we got here we were only looking at houses for sale in North Pole because we know some people who live there. I am glad we chose where we did!
