Home Protection

Hello all! Happy Halloween to you!

I need a little guidance when it comes to PHYSICAL magic. Magic that can be accomplished through herbs, insense, runes, plants, food etc. Anything physical/natural from which I can draw energy/power (magic).

Especially when it comes to home cleansing/protection. For instance, creating talismen to place above my door, or (an example I was given recently) putting out salt to absorb negative energy and cleanse a room.

I would be happy to take book referrals if you'd prefer to give me advice that way.

Anything, at this point in my journey, helps.

Thank you!

That is a very big question lol.  I learned most of this type of stuff from my mentor and actually experiencing it all and combining it with research. I have a huge library that I have been building for over 15 years and is a combination of books, hand written hand-me downs from my mentor and articles(such as the green egg).    However I can say this, you will want to find ways to narrow your focus list.  You can study herbs for years before being comfortable enough to use them ritualistically.  And some of your list up above can go into others.  Such as I would classify incense and cooking with herbs and plants.  There are sooo many books out there that cover this type of material and over and over.  And on top of it there are many different styles and types.  Do you know what type of craft you are interested in?

Thank you for taking the time to begin answering my question! I am not really sure what calls me. The thought of working with runes is very appealing. And I've always, also, been very drawn to herbs and plants (that might be me being a future biologist). The book To Ride a Silver Broomstick by Silver RavenWolf was referred to me for the basics of witchcraft and I've been reading it thoroughly. Also, I'm not so interested in eleborat ceremonial magic (a term I learned in the book, yay!). I suppose I'd best fit with Kitchen witchery for its practicality. I think anything that uses the physcial (herbs, plants, stones, etc.) over the visual.  Does that make sense?

Yes it does.  I am a kitchen witch myself and I know a few other ladies here are as well.  Personally I learned it pretty easy because I was raised in an italian american family and learned to cook when I was ten.  I have always cooked with intent.  Books that I always recommend for this sort of path are:

books by ellen dugan and Patricia telesco are good as they both practice this form of magic.

check out luckymojo.com. It is hoodoo, which is the magick i practice and find very satisfying and powerful. It is similar to ravenwolf's powwow, but a little older and grounded in southern root magick as influenced by transplanted african and native american magickal practices and plant correspondences. That's a very clumsy description. My apologies. The site is worth checking out, regardless:)

nd for home protection, a railroad spike at each of the 4 corners of your property to 'tie it down' is a very effective way to start, imo.

Thanks Angelenia! I will certainly look into it. I'm not ruling anything out at this point since I'm still learning and have yet to find what calls to me :)
