I'm thinking of creating my own unit study. Have any of you ladies done this? If so what has helped you out?

Yes, I've done that. And I've even written a post about it. Maybe it would help you?

How to Plan a Great Unit Study

It's more of a set of steps to work through than anything else. It would be nice if there were fancy printable planner sheets, but since we all tend to think so differently, it may be hard to customize something like that.

Have you tried Lapbooks? They are wonderful in implementing a unit study! If you search for homeschool lapbooks online you can find free resources that you can print out too.
