MUS v. Moving With Math

I am trying to decide between the two programs for my Kinder DS. They both seem to have the manipulative/hands on work that he needs, and both have good reviews as far as I can tell.

Has anybody used either of these? What did you like? Dislike?

Thanks! (piog)

I was in the same boat. I went with moving with math because it seemed more age appropriate for my son. I showed the scope and sequence to my MIL who is a first fade teacher and she said it was geared more toward first grade work than kinder. We haven't officially started, but I've read through the lessons and like it.

I'm not TOO worried about that, as we are "technically" still in PreK, and my son is already doing quite a bit of K work. They both look fantastic, and my biggest concern is the possibility of having to switch. DS really, really, really does not do well with change, so I kind of feel like if I choose the wrong one to begin with I will be setting him up for struggle right off the bat with the other.

DH is concerned that MUS doesn't teach "to the test," but since we do not plan on testing until highschool that is a nonissue. Sigh.

Thanks for your input! I would love to know how you feel about Moving With Math after you have been using it for a bit!

I started out in kindergarten with horizon math, not a good fit, and then switched to MUS. My DS loves MUS and flies through the lessons.
It doesn't cover some concepts as soon as other programs because it goes in a very precise order which can be a problem of you live in a state that requires testing (like mine) or are trying to teach to state standard. The best solution for this I have found is to supplement the few things it doesn't cover soon enough to insure my DS is exposed to the concepts before he has to do his first test. I know a lot of others who do this as well and have no probelms with it.

Thanks! I'm not too worried about testing, as we are military and our home of record hasattendance requirement, but does not require testing.

Someone in another group mentioned that they were told by a PS teacher that Alpha was more geared towards first grade than K. Did  you notice a large gap after starting out with something else?
My preschooler is really, really ahead of the game in math, but since he will be only 4 when we begin K work (in math anyway! He is your typical 3-year old- in every other area.) I don't want to overwhelm him with something that would be considered advanced for a 5-6 yo.
