Over the years I have tried many recipes, that I really liked, but my family always asks for this traditional one. This is enough stuffing for a small turkey 11-13 lbs. For a larger turkey, just double amounts. If you end up with more than will go in the bird, just put it in a casserole dish and bake for about 30-45 minutes in a 350 oven.
Turkey Stuffing
1/4 cup butter
1 onion, diced (1 cup)
2-3 ribs celery, chopped (1 cup)
6 cups breadcrumbs (I make my own, but you can use purchased)
1 teaspoon poultry seasoning
1/2 teaspoon sage
Salt & pepper to taste
1 cup chicken or turkey broth
2 eggs, slightly beaten
Saute onions and celery in butter. Add breadcrumbs to a large bowl. Add seasonings and mix. Add onions and celery, broth and eggs. Mix to combine. Place in turkey cavity or in casserole dish and bake at 350 for 30-45 minutes.
How do you make yours?
i use store bought croutons, but other than that it,s pretty much the same as yours , I do add sausage , onion, celery, apples , sauted toghether , then use enough drippings from bacon wrapped turkey to give moisture to stuffing so it,s nice and moist and not mushy, i do not stuff the bird , i put it in a seprate baking dish and bake it for about 30 min to make sure heated through .
First of all. I'm southern, so it's dressing. I use a skillet of cornbread, a bag of pepperidge farm dry dressing mix. Moisten very well with chicken broth. Add 1/2 pound cooked sausage. Saute 1 onion and the leafy part of a bunch of celery. along with 2-4 stalks of chopped celery in 1 stick of butter. I also add a small can of mushroom stems and pieces. Mix all ingredients, adding ground sage to taste. I don't cook it in the bird, bake in casserole at 350 for about 45 minutes.
I cheat and use Stove Top. *blush* I doctor it up like nobody's business, though. The day before, I saute sausage and diced onions and celery. When I mix the dressing, I use chicken broth instead of water and mix in my extras. I might throw in a little Montreal Chicken Seasoning, poultry seasoning, or sage.
I make the most basic of basic stuffings and I stuff the bird. My granmda Addie did simple dishes for T-Day and I follow her recipe cards to a "t"
12 tbsp margarine
1 1/4 cups white onion, chopped
1 1/4 cups celery, chopped
3 bag (1.5 boxes) Mrs. Cubbinsons Seasoned Stuffing
1 cup dried cranberries
1 can (more or less as needed) low sodium chicken broth
Melt maragarine in a large saute pan. Add in onions and celery and cook on low heat until onions are clear and celery is softened. In a mixing bowl, combine stuffing and cranberries, Add veggies and todd well. Moisten with broth until consistancy is very moist but not gooey. Do not underdo the broth but remember stuffing the bird also adds moisture.
Loosly stuff the bird and place remaining stuffing in a greased casserole and cook in a 325 oven for 30-40 minutes.
