I bought my hybrid bike about 1.5 years ago and have been steadily increasing my mileage and training. I used to be an avid runner, but have since switched over to cycling mainly. The running shoes were just too expensive to be replacing every 3-4 months and the cycling is much easier on my joints.
I now ride an average of 80-100 miles a week. I was in a duathlon back in April where I ran 3 miles and biked 10. It was so much fun being out there with other people - I had a blast! I have my first half-century ride coming up on July 29th - the Sweet Corn Challenge. It's in the beautiful Cuyahoga Valley park area inCleveland. What I like is that it is a tour and not a race, so there's no pressure to try and go fast. 50 miles is a long ride, and I'd like to kind of "sit back and enjoy the view" while I'm out there.
