Hi! I'm Sar and I have two little boys and am 12 1/2 weeks pregnant with my third. I'm considering having a natural hospital birth with this one...but I'm still unsure. Here's a little backstory...
With my first I was induced one day before my due date. (Getting induced was a bad idea, I won't do that again unless I'm well past my due date.) I wanted to be induced (my doctor offered and I was anxious to have him so I went ahead... :/) but I also wanted to try to go without any pain meds. I didn't prepare in any way. I only had a few contractions and got the epidural...looking back those contractions weren't bad. :/ I had to roll a lot with him because his heart rate would shoot up whenever I had a contraction, and rolling stunk because I was numb and couldn't help myself. They started talking C-section towards the end but luckily things picked back up and I was able to deliver him vaginally. He came out okay but the team was a little nervous because he was flushed, they said that the pitocin probably made my contractions too hard on him. I don't know though. So after that birth I say no to inductions.
With my second I went into labor naturally two weeks before my due date. I didn't even know I was in labor, but I went to L&D because I had a bit of bleeding. They hooked me up and I was contracting like you should be for early labor and my doctor checked me after I had walked around and I was dailated to a three. My doctor broke my water after I had dialated to a four or five, and I still wasn't feeling any pain. I wanted to walk around but the nurse told me I was bedridden because the baby was still high up there and the cord could come out. So I got my epidural then. This time getting the epidural hurt soooooo badly and it took forever for the person to be done, and I'm suspicious that it didn't work the way it was supposed to because my hips and one of my legs was numb, but my other leg was "awake". Anyways when I was getting ready to push it felt like either the epidural either tapered off or stopped working because it hurt! I didn't feel anything in my pelvis but the contractions were really really bad. But then when I started pushing I could do something with the pain and it wasn't so bad. After I had him one of my legs didn't wake up until about 18 hours later, it woke up right before the nurses would have called my OB about it.
Anyways this time around I would like to go without the epidural. I hated not being able to move myself, I hate how much getting the last one hurt and how scary it was that my leg didn't wake up with the rest of my lower body. I also want to hold off going to the hospital so early, so I can walk around and not be trapped in bed twiddling my thumbs.
But I'm scared. I don't know what could be worse the pain of labor or the pain of another epidural. But I figure if I even feel a little bit of desire to go natural that I should give it an honest effort, that I have a few months to make up my mind for sure and I have a few months to prepare. (I like to be overly-prepared). My husband is on board with me and says that he will support me in this.
Anyways I have a few questions. I've lurked around here and you've brought up something I didn't even think of and that is the IV...what is it even for? lol. Why is it "necessary"? How do you go around having one in a hospital if you don't want one. The only thing I *think* I have to be hooked up to is the blood pressure machine because my blood pressure dips pretty low during labor. And the thing I'm probably most worried about is tearing, my doctor doesn't do cuts unless it's a desperate situation, so I've always just torn. But I'm most worried about that pain wise. What are the different kinds of methods that are commonly used for natural labor and where can I research them (books, sites, DVD's, etc.).
Anyways I guess that's all I have for now. Thanks in advance for anything!
