CNM's ?

Anyone ever seen a certified nurse midwife? Are they anything like actual midwives?

The midwife I had when I gave birth only does prenatal care, homebirths, and postnatal care... but I need a well woman checkup as I think there is something off in that area. I also was curious if state healthcare would cover a CNM, or if it would be out of pocket? My midwife did not work with any healthcare programs, or more so they wouldn't work with her...so will they cover CNM's?

Thanks!

Most insurance will cover a CNM.  they are similar to Midwives in that they learn the Midwifery Model of Care but they also almost always work under an OB and are part of a "medical team" rather than independent practicioners.

I know some really great CNM's but in general, I would not make that my first choice for pregnancy care provider because of the political rules surrounding how CNM's are allowed to practice.

For a well woman check up a CNM should be just fine.

When I had state insurance I was able to see a CNM. I have different insurance now, but am having my third pregnancy with the same CNM practice at my hospital.

I haven't used one for my own but have worked nearby and felt they can lean more toward the medical-model than the midwifery-model.

My state insurance covered them and CPMs for out of hospital birthing, too.
I had great waterbirths with my Medicaid!

In my experiences CNMs are just like OBs not like direct entry and professional midwives you might find one here or there that was direct entry or profession and leans that way but they practice the medical model mostly and not the midwifery model, my MW and I were just talking about this.

Thanks!

Its just for a well woman checkup and maybe if I can talk them into it a little poking around to see what is going on inside. I'd go to the midwife who I had with my son except she doesn't do those kinds of checkups (and my insurance won't cover her), and the only OBGYN I was ever comfortable with isn't practising anymore. Had figured a CNM may be a nice in between (and my insurance might cover it) lol.

You also have the option of seeing a Family Practice care provider. I use an NP (nurse practitioner)

I had CNM's at the ooh bc I delivered at and loved them! One of the midwives actually used to live at The Farm. I will be going back there if I have any more children.

We have CMNs in my town that do take medicaid but they don't do well-woman exams, only pregnancy related care.  They are medwives.
