When should I give my 4 month old food?

I exclusively breastfeed and I went to the doc today and they told me I should give my 4 month old rice cereal, because he will not have enough iron... can't they test iron levels (I should have asked)? They said I shouldn't give him fruits or veggies before 6 months because of food allergies. What's the low down? What did everyone else do?

With my daughter I was very excited to start solids (mistake #1: makIng it about ME) so we started cereal at 5 mo. and fruits and veggies at 6 mo. This time I'm going to forego purees and just give my son soft foods (bananas, avocado, etc) when he starts showing an interest

I do baby led solids no purees or rice cereal.  Also BM is high in iron so your baby is fine.  Also rice cereal is a bad thing to give as a first food because babies don't make the digestive enzymes needed to break down rice until they are about 8 or 9 months old.   BM is fine and once the baby shows food interest you can do soft table food, and oatmeal since it is digestable and much healthier.  Rice cereal is garbage food no nutrition hard on their system.

I plan on waiting until ds2 is 8 months or so to start cereal.

This about covers it. I didn't know about bls until after I started ds on purees at 7 months. It held him back because when we tried transitioning him to more solid foods he was used to just being able to suck down the purees, so he'd choke and gag. It was really scary a few times. So I stopped until 12 months and tried again with bls. He's 15 months now and an awesome eater. There's no rush and you create problems when you try to push it! Every baby is different and will be ready at a different time. But definitely SKIP the rice cereal and wait until at LEAST 6 months minimum.

Your baby is ready for food when he can pick up food, put in his mouth, swallow, and reach for more.  Purees were developed in the 1930-50s when babies started cereal and "solids" as early as a few weeks old... there really is no need for them.  My 7 month old has never had cereal or purees; he just eats sticks of fruits, veggies, and meats-- pretty much whatever we are eating for dinner.

Here's more information on baby-led weaning... the audio is long but interesting and the book is very good.

There is no need for iron supplementation... a lot of pedis say they need it because BM has less iron than formula, but the iron in breastmilk is more easily digested.

Never anything before 6 months, never give rice cereal it's junk. That doctor is using outdated info from 30 years ago. Breastmilk doesn't have as much iron, but they've found that it's absorbed much better than synthetic iron. The iron in cereal actually interferes and makes them absorb it worse. Also the gut isn't ready for real food til 6 months, it messes up the balance before that. Simple fruits & veggies are the best first foods! That doesn't increase good allergy risk. Ugh, outdated info from doctors! Check out kellymom.com
