TSA requires mom to pump breastmilk in public bathroom before boarding plane

A Hawaiian mom says she was humiliated when asked to prove her breast pump was real at an airport.

The woman says she was flagged for additional screening at the Lihue Airport Wednesday because of her electric breast feeding pump.

She claims agents told her she couldn't take the pump on the plane because the bottles in her carry-on were empty.

"I asked him if there was a private place I could pump and he said no, you can go in the women's bathroom. I had to stand in front of the mirrors and the sinks and pump my breast in front of every tourist that walked into that bathroom. I was embarrassed and humiliated and then angry that I was treated this way.

When the bottles were full, she was allowed back on the plane.

The TSA is apologizing, saying the agent made a mistake.

The agency released a statement, saying in part: "We accept responsibility for the apparent misunderstanding and any inconvenience or embarrassment this incident may have caused her."

The TSA recently changed screening procedures to allow women to carry breast milk onto planes without testing it.

However, breast pumps may require additional screening.

It's still ridiculous. Everything about TSA is up to how the agent wants to uphold the rules. There is no consistency at all! From one airport to the next or even on different days.

Not all agents are buttholes but the ones that are make all of them looks bad.  People like this need to be in different positions NOT one of power.

The REAL issue from my understanding is that he wanted her to through away the ice pack that came with her pump and said if she was using it she would not have to.  Thats CRAZY.  THAT is why she had to pump, not to prove the pump was real necessarily.

What gets me is what if she had not been able to pump much? WHat if it had been right after she pumped beause in another story it says she dumped all her milk before this so that she would not have an incident.

The woman should've demanded to see a supervisor, demanded a private place to pup or something.

it seems really strange that freezer pack would be okay if it had milk next to it but not okay if it didnt.  i mean how does that even make sense?

and i *think* she did ask for a private space but was told she had to do it in the bathroom and because she needed an outlet she couldnt use a private stall.  i would have demanded to see a puerviser as well, but i have seen footage of what some tsa agents do to people they deem "uncooperative" and that would be scary as well.
