African mothers see baby strollers as abhorrent fad
Tradition of carrying children upheld; 'they can't sit like lumps'
I agree, mostly. They are extremely overused, but they still have a purpose sometimes. DS is only 20 months, so the 5 block up and down steep hills walk to our park is a bit much for him. And, I'm 13 weeks pregnant, small, and hubby has back problems, so baby-wearing a 27 pounder isn't very easy, even in a mei tai on the back. We push him in the stroller instead. DD is 3.5 years old and, although she complains, has no problem physically handling the walk :)
Quoting TrentsMom84:YES!!! Agreed times 1000!!! It's like if you don't have them completely self sufficient by the time their 1 then you'll never get them out of the house at 18. Considering how many Americans in their mid twenties are still having their lives subsidized by their parents I'd guess that's not the answer.
My SIL that stays at home once bragged to me that she didn't pick her 6 month old up all day unless it was to feed her. I guess she thought I'd be impressed by her daughter's independence but all it made me think was that she was lazy and neglectful.

I enjoyed this article very much. I have been thinking a lot lately about the fact that our society believes that children should learn to be independent from birth. They spend their first nine months snuggled deep with in mommy and in an instant are forced to get use to being alone: in a crib, in a swing, in a stroller. Always with music or videos to comfort them. I no longer wonder why American kids are the way they are; why they don't behave and want more and more material things to make then happy. They are taught to take comfort in "things" rather than their families. I'll step off my soap box now.
Ie the state fair...i like having the cup holders and a place to store everything u collect through out the day in the bottom
Lol I usually still bring a carrier though and use the seat for storage at times

I agree, they are handy for fairs, museums, zoos, etc. Like most other things I think the problem is overuse.

There are times when they are nice though

Quoting jconney80:I LOVE this!! We do have strollers but they mostly serve as a way to carry all of our stuff around....water jug, diaper bag, cooler, & potty bag. Gracie gets worn all of the time & Markus walks. lol It is nice to have at the zoo, museum, or theme park that involves us to have more stuff with us. Other than that we don't use them!
