Up until now I have just given ethan whole cow's milk because we used wic but we technically don't qualify after august when he turns 2 and i really want a  better alternative for him. i love coconut milk on my cereal and chocolate almond milk to drink, but wasn't sure what would be best for him.

We use coconut and almond milk and both my kids (4 and 1) drink it.

You can use either.  Rice and Hemp milk are other options.  I thought you could qualify for WIC until age 5 though-I've certainly seen kids older than 2 in the office.

our income disqualifies us. technically we don't recert until feb but since we dont actually need it, i thought i would try to get away from wic and provide some even healthier options. the only way i would use wic again is if we really need it when we move home if i have trouble finding a job or something.

After two milk isn't necessary and it's best not to rely on it at all. That said, coconut, hemp, almond are the best.

It's actually REALLY important not to rely on dairy for calcium because, sure it has calcium, but the über proteins in milk extract calcium from our bones and can cause osteoporosis. Animal milk has calcium because animals eat greens, so the calcium from milk is really sloppy seconds anyway.
The BEST source of calcium is leafy greens like kale, broccoli, spinach. Almonds are really good too. Here are other sources, but those are the top. And if you're eating a well balanced diet your body sill be able to absorb the calcium just fine.

Oh!! And physical stress on the bones helps build them- things like running, jumping, general physical activities are great for bone strength!

oh sure the 3 veggies in the world he hates. lol! that's very informative tho. thank you. i like almond milk so i think we will just stick with that for now and keep encouraging the greens.
