Breastfeeding mamas: does anyone know how safe it is to.use dandelion root while ebf? I started taking it for my pupps the day before yesterday (in conjunction with vitamin D3-1000 with nearly miraculous results) but upon second guessing the safety of the herb and spending a little time on Google (go ahead and laugh), Im now concerned that I shouldn't continue.to take it. Im mobile so I couldn't do too much research but what I found was a lot of "consult your physician" type instructions.
So since.I don't have a physician...Im hoping one of you might be able to help. Thank you!

http://foodunderfoot.com/dandelion-breastfeeding says it's good during breastfeeding.

http://www.wisewomantradition.com/childbearingyear/2006/09/fertility_herbs.html too.

"Dandelion as a food, or the root tincture, tea, or vinegar is safe for you while nursing little ones. In fact in Susun's Wise Woman Herbal for the Childbearing Year, she recommends you ingest it as well as give it to your newborn when dealing with jaundice, with no warning of a limit to how much."

Seems it should be fine as long as you aren't using too much of it. :)

Can't imagine why not, but maybe try to find a local naturopath or herbalist to ask? I'm sure they'd be happy to answer the question via email or phone. There may even be a line you can call. Let me look into that.

If you go here http://www.blackmores.com.au/ you can chat with a naturopath online. Blackmores is a very reputable company in Australia. :)

I will ask them your question, since it seems you are mobile, and come back with an update.

Update: The naturopath has said that they generally cannot suggest using herbal remedies during pregnancy or breastfeeding, but IF you were using the dandelion root to treat the PUPPs during pregnancy, continue to use it as you were, previously, as your care provider advised.

She also suggested taking, up to 4 times a day:

  • Potassium chloride - 65 mg
  • Iron phosphate - 15 mg

Hope that helps!
