Saw this on Saving Our Sons.

It's a sad day when paychecks are more important than protecting the rights of our most vulnerable to bodily autonomy :(

On a positive note, they are still not recommending it routinely... just stating that they believe it needs to be available for families who choose it.

Abstract

Male circumcision is a common procedure, generally performed during the newborn period in the United States. In 2007, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) formed a multidisciplinary task force of AAP members and other stakeholders to evaluate the recent evidence on male circumcision and update the Academy’s 1999 recommendations in this area. Evaluation of current evidence indicates that the health benefits of newborn male circumcision outweigh the risks and that the procedure’s benefits justify access to this procedure for families who choose it. Specific benefits identified included prevention of urinary tract infections, penile cancer, and transmission of some sexually transmitted infections, including HIV. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists has endorsed this statement.

Policy Statement

Systematic evaluation of English-language peer-reviewed literature from 1995 through 2010 indicates that preventive health benefits of elective circumcision of male newborns outweigh the risks of the procedure. Benefits include significant reductions in the risk of urinary tract infection in the first year of life and, subsequently, in the risk of heterosexual acquisition of HIV and the transmission of other sexually transmitted infections.

The procedure is well tolerated when performed by trained professionals under sterile conditions with appropriate pain management. Complications are infrequent; most are minor, and severe complications are rare. Male circumcision performed during the newborn period has considerably lower complication rates than when performed later in life.

Although health benefits are not great enough to recommend routine circumcision for all male newborns, the benefits of circumcision are sufficient to justify access to this procedure for families choosing it and to warrant third-party payment for circumcision of male newborns. It is important that clinicians routinely inform parents of the health benefits and risks of male newborn circumcision in an unbiased and accurate manner.

Parents ultimately should decide whether circumcision is in the best interests of their male child. They will need to weigh medical information in the context of their own religious, ethical, and cultural beliefs and practices. The medical benefits alone may not outweigh these other considerations for individual families.

I was literally just going to make a post about this very topic. Last night my DH and I decided not to circ our son but now I'm reading that there ARE health benefits to circumcision???

My computer isn't letting me cut and paste right now but the article from Johns Hopkins states that "there are health benefits to infant male circumcision in guarding against illness and disease...".

I thought there were NO medical benefits to circ'ing so that's why we decided against it. Where is this information now coming from? Is this medical evidence and if so where can I find the research that proves there are health benefits to circumcision?? I'm so confused and flipping out!!

It's based on faulty research. Forget teaching children the importance of safe sex, cut off a piece of their body and say they're protected. This could very well backfire. Circumcised males sleeping with people with STDs will still get STDs.

Personal responsibility, ladies. We run from it. Obesity epidemic in our children? Force McDonalds to stop giving toys out in Happy Meals. Rise in STDs? Cut Your sons. Rise in UTIs? Cut your sons. All instead of teaching your children to eat healthy, practice safe sex and to clean their body parts.

Money. Money. Money.

I doubt they would ever "ban" it here in the US, in part for freedom to practice religion (eg Jewish faith).

Interesting that they are claiming health benefits because I thought there were no health benefits from it from the latest research. I'm almost as confused as the first poster!

Ridiculous! Greedy politics!
My sons will remain intact and I will teach them about safe sexpractices. That seems much more reasonable than hacking off a piece of their bodies without consent.

They've prevented religion from harming children/people in the past in the us.

However, until circumcision is viewed as as unnecessary as it is, the ban wouldn't pass.

My understanding is that is 1. based on faulty/biased/money driven research and 2. primarily describing circumcision as "protection" from UTIs and STDs... essentially suggesting parents circumcise their babies instead of learning and teaching about proper hygiene and safe sex.

And of course, hospitals and big pharma will lose a lot of revenue if they start performing fewer cirumcision surgeries and have fewer foreskins to sell to labs.

There are a lot of reasons to keep your son intact!

Who are these "other stakeholders" of which they speak? I'll give you three guesses and two hints. One rhymes with finsurance and another with schmig parma.
