I've labored in the tub and it is WAY less painful. As soon as I stepped in there was a huge sense of relief. It's also WAAAY less painful to not be on your back.

I haven't given birth in the water, but I did labor in water with my first son. The water was awesome pain relief :)

I havent given birth yet, but I am pregnant with my first (due in June) and my midwife told me that she wants me to try waterbirth first, then I can change my mind if I want to. I have every plan to do a waterbirth anyways...so I am quite happy with my midwife. She told me that it is so much easier on the body and a lot less painful :)

Most of the time, you don't want to be in the bed, anyway.  It doesn't help you progress at all.  Keep moving if you're not in the tub.  Walk.  Sit on the birthing ball. Sway your hips.  You definitely don't want to be on your back for the pushing stage, as it makes the opening smaller.
