Giving soy milk to 1 year old.

My son does not tolerate dairy (he is nursed and if I have dairy or eggs he cries and cries).

Anyway, he will be 1 in a few weeks. I am interested in giving him soy milk and cutting down the frequency of his nursing. Have you given soy milk to your child in lieu of cows milk? How did you introduce it (I have been substituting soy milk for dairy for months w no adverse reactions to ds so I do not think he has a soy allergy).

Thank you for your input:)

I wold not give soy, if he has an allergy to cows milk soy could be a problem too. Also too much soy is not good for you (especially growing boys) because it causes an increase in estrogen. Maybe try almond or coconut, or just stick to water.

I would not give soy at all. My middle was severely intolerant to cow milk, and there's no way I woulda given him soy. Soy has estrogen-like properties (why menopausal women sometimes use it as a supplement)
Kids don't need milk, especially if he still nurses at least 3 times a day. If you are set on doing a milk substitute look into coconut, almond, or hemp (there's rice milk too, but that's basically just sugar water, no nutrition in it)

None of my children tolerate dairy.  When my oldest was little I knew he needed whole milk for that second yr so I started him on organic soy toddler formula at a year.  Soymilk doesn't contain enough fat on its own. When I had my 2nd child a lightbulb went on for me.  Breast milk is whole milk and decided I would breast feed till at least age 2.  They need that fat for brain development.  That was my experience.

When your child is older look into almond milk, much healthier than soy.

I would also avoid soy. My 21 month old DS loves coconut milk. Had his first actual coconut right off the beach in Costa Rica and has loved them ever since. He will also drink almond milk. He has a dairy allergy (as do I) poor thing breaks out in an itchy full body eczema rash and gets an upset tummy with diarrhea. I would also like to try goats milk but I'm not sure yet if we will. He still BF often enough though that he doesn't need anything beside water. I like to have something DH can give him when I'm at work though.

I definitely wouldn't do soy, for many of the reasons listed above.

The Whole Soy Story is a great resource if you are looking for more information.
