A friend posted on FB about another cosleeping death with a high, drunk adult in the bed. I replied with, "That's murder, not cosleeping."

BTW, she's for cosleeping so she didn't mean it in an anti kind of way.

About 65 deaths every year from bed sharing. A majority are formula fed or are not sleeping in a bed (they are on a chair or on a couch). Over 3,000 (that is a more recent number since the Back to Sleep Campaign), die each year alone in their crib. The second link is from Dr. James McKenna, an anthropologist from Notre Dame. The third link is just an interesting study. The fourth link is the break down on what lead to the death of the child with a shared sleeping surface (even bed sharing irresponsibility has less deaths than crib sleeping!).

Does anyone have any REAL stats on co-sleeping deaths/injuries?  I coslept with my son out of necessity, but I was always really worried about it.  That was five years ago, and I still haven't been able to find stats for it that don't include SIDS or things like this.  Is that because there aren't any!?  lol

Negligent homicide, IMO.

Right? Especially since it happened in Milwaukee and a friend said they ask them in the hospital if they have cribs to use and you can get free playpens from the fire stations!

I don't think that's quite fair. We always have beer/wine/liquor in the house, but neither of us drinks with any regularity. It mostly gets used for cooking. I've had the same 3 beer bottles in my fridge for over 6 months. Our DS does not sleep in our bed the very infrequent times we do drink.

My mother does continue to be horrified by the fact of co-sleeping, however, even though it obviously hasn't hurt him, and makes sure to bring it up every time she hears about a co-sleeping death, but whenever you ask her about any particulars such as drinking, she doesn't know.

Quoting VintageWife:

Exactly! I think the general rule should be that if you have drugs and alcohol (more than a couple cans of beer) in the house, then you should not cosleep.

I agree. You should not be drunk or high with your children anyway let alone in the same bed with them. That is not SIDS that is murder.

This. I don't agree with murder, legally speaking.

I agree, if a parent is not safely cosleeping its murder
