Why do braxton hicks not hurt?

I know they don't cause you to dilate or efface, but your muscles are still tightening up. I just would think that they would hurt just like if any other muscle tightened up in the same way.

Depends on the person. I don't notice if I've ever had any BH, ever, and I'm 35 weeks into my 3rd pregnancy. I also didn't feel my contractions with my older two until SROM. With my first, I didn't believe I was in labor. With my second, I had to pay close attention to notice them.

Some people, they hurt, badly.

mine don't hurt till I get further along
in the beginning it's just hard to catch my breath

I think of it like working out, it doesn't really hurt WHILE your working out

Its not like a Charlie horse, where it's an involuntary spasm

I've had a few uncomfortable ones and a few I had to breath through because they were pretty painful.

Maybe it varies from person to person. Last pregnancy I wasn't even aware of BHs at all.  This pregnancy I was aware of them beginning very early on - and then hurt. I'm kindof hoping the plus side will be my uterus has done a lot of additional toning that I must have needed to prepare for this birth - it is a wait and see at this point.
