Asking to nurse after being weaned

My son (turned 2 on Jan 28) has been weaned for about 3 weeks. It was a gradual process and the final nursing session to go was the 5-10 minutes he nursed about 30 min before he would be tucked in.

Tonight was the first time he has asked to nurse since we stopped. I told him that I could get him some water and would love to snuggle with him and so that's what we did. We snuggled for almost 30 minutes and he almost fell asleep in my arms.

My youngest and last baby is weaned and my heart is hurting a little bit right now. I celebrate my children growing and enjoy the days that come once they leave baby and toddlerhood behind. But some nights, like tonight, I realize how fast it's gone. And it breaks my heart that it's over.

Just sharing here bc I know many of you can relate. Feel free to join in on the wallowing:)

That is sad, I totally understand.  You have done good Mama!

You've probably seen the following poem before, but it seems a good reminder of just what a great job you did in weaning your little one gently, and how your gentleness is continuing.  Good job mama!

"Wean Me Gently"

I know I look so big to you,

Maybe I seem too big for the needs I have.

But no matter how big we get,

We still have needs that are important to us.

I know that our relationship is growing and changing,

But I still need you. I need your warmth and closeness,

Especially at the end of the day

When we snuggle up in bed.

Please don't get too busy for us to nurse.

I know you think I can be patient,

Or find something to take the place of a nursing -

A book, a glass of something,

But nothing can take your place when I need you.

Sometimes just cuddling with you,

Having you near me is enough.

I guess I am growing and becoming independent,

But please be there.

This bond we have is so strong and so important to me,

Please don't break it abruptly.

Wean me gently,

Because I am your mother,

And my heart is tender.

My son just turned 2 and is down to nursing 1-2 times per day. I know he is almost weaned and he is my last child. It is bittersweet for sure.

I was nursing my 14 month old on the bed this morning.  My nearly 3-year-old saw us and climbed up onto the bed and laid down next to us.  He put his head beside his brother's head and put his hand near my hand that was cupping my breast and just laid there as his brother nursed.

He's not nursed since he self-weaned about 15 months old, when I was 3 months pregnant with his younger brother.  One day he just stopped--and I thought he was done.  But today makes me wonder...
