My daughter just pointed something out to me:  How can Harry be 17, when his parents died in 1981, and he was one year old when they died? He'd be 25...Right?

That is of course you are going based on the fact that it is the year 2007 in book 7. It never says that it is 2007, for all we know it could be 1998. JK Rowling started writing the books in 1990, and if you assume the first book was also 1990, that would put Harry about the right age. Also, if you think about it, it has also been 2 years since the last book came out, yet 2 years obviously has not passed for Harry. So you cant really go assume that it is the same year to Harry as it for us.

If you do the math from CoS at Nick's deathday party you will learn that the kids birthdates are:
Harry - July 31, 1980
Ron - March 1, 1980
Hermione - Sept 19, 1979
