Jake was already trained when I got him. The funny thing is, he doesn't stand by the door or bark when he has to go out. He comes to wherever I am and paws at me. I finally learned that means he has to go out. Usually, it's about 5 am when he comes to my room and wakes me up by pawing me. The lady I got him from said he was hard to train, but once he learned it was a breeze. Good luck.
My girl doesn't have a problem peeing inside the house. They have free reign of the house and the back door is always open so she knows to go outside when she has to go pee. BUT, during the night, she'll wake up and start barking/crying to be let out. I'll take her out, she'll pee, come back into her bedroom and a couple of hours later, she'll cry again. It's frustrating!
I agree with the bell on the door we also did this and our weim always used it.... we now have indoor/outdoor cats and they will both also hit the bell to go out since we don't keep a litter box inside
