ok so i posted a while back we were gonna get another rescue weim? a blue one named roscoe... ok so here is what happened with that. we got him, did a trial run for about a month right? well that month went by and we went to get him fixed (he was unfixed when we got him). a week after we get him home he starts chewing on shoes and stuff which he never did (he was a GREAT DOG). we took him to the vet who did some testing and caught a bladder infection we thought was making him sick. well we got him better got him home and then a couple days later he was sick again? well we took him back to the vet and got him fixed up again and brought him home. that time we thought maybe he ate something in our back yard that made him sick? well the other morning we were all laying in the bed and my kids were of course in the bed and the dog. well the dog spent half the night up and down and up and down and started chewing stuff again so we were gonna take him back to the vet. well our oldest was trying to play with roscoe and roscoe bit him in the head. ok so we spend the morning in the ER and came home to a mess. well when kirt went to put him outside he decided to attack kirt as well. now kirt is beat up by the dog and we have a mess to clean and a kid that has a staple in his head cuz of the dog. well we were on the phone with the rescue society we dealt with and they had animal control come out and pick up the dog. they had to use a pole to get him to the truck cuz he was that bad. it was like he was a totally different dog then when we first got him. i mean i can understand he wasnt feeling well but we never figured out what was wrong with him. they think it could have been a weed in our yard but kirt and i think different. when roscoe was fixed he had a hard time with the anthesia and considering he was an older dog (he was at least five if not older) we wondered if maybe something went wrong in the dog and it turned him. he was never agressive with us before he got fixed. it just seemed to be about a week after he got fixed that he turned into a nightmare and even then it wasnt that bad it was just that one day. no one could figure out what was wrong with him, he was hyper salivating, chewing stuff up that he never did before, he stumbled a lot and well got agressive that last day. i wondered what you guys thought? we have been tossing around the idea that he was too old to maybe get fixed? or maybe there was an underlying cause. he was supossed to be an owner surrender that owned him since he was a pup. we also thought maybe the spot clinic we got him fixed at did something wrong and they screwed up something? we're just at a point where we have no clue what was wrong. that was our last chance for a rescue too. i'm done with rescue dogs. do you think that it's possible that maybe the age was an issue?

Wow - I'm sorry you had to go through all of that.  IMO, it sounds like there is something medically wrong with Rosco.  I doubt the neutering had anything to do with it - it was more than likely just a coincidence.  The sudden aggression, behavoir change, stumbling and salivating all sound WAY OFF.  Did your vet do a complete work up on him?  Gosh, those kind of symptoms could mean lots of things.

Did you adopt him through weim rescue?  It's odd that a rescue would adopt an animal out prior to having them altered.

Honestly, any reputable rescue WILL put down a dog with a bite history.  Is the rescue or the vet giving you any sort of idea as to what may have caused this?

I have some contacts of you're looking for more answers.  Feel free to pm me.

Everything you have described here are symptoms of RABIES ! I used to be a vet tech , the the hyper salivation , sudden aggressiveness and the inability to stay steady on his feet are HUGE red flags for rabies . Maybe he was immune to the shot (assuming he had one) or something . I would get your hubby and son vaccinated ASAP . Its a painful process , but rabies is just as deadly to humans .

Wow, I want to say sorry to hear about all this. To me, this doesnt sound anything like Weim behavior. And I agree that it does sound like symptoms of Rabies. I would take everyone exposed to get checked.

wow really? i might have to look into that with the ped. my husband and son seem to be fine. both are gonna have scars but seem to be doing ok. nothing out of the ordinary. he had a rabies shot or so his tag said but if he had problems with it i guess i could understand.

i talked to my husband about the rabies thing and i forgot that the shelter told us if they called us that it wasnt a good sign. i guess they were gonna test him for rabies before they put him down. how that slipped my brain i dont know but we never got a call from them so i dont think it was rabies?

The only way to 'test'' an animal for rabies is to send there brain (a bit graphic , Im sorry) to the states lab to be tested . Thats how it was when I was a vet tech , which was years ago however . They may not have to results back or you may need to call them to double check . unfortunately alot of the times , those kinda places are not good about getting back to ppl .
