Hi.. Trying to make a long story somewhat short:
My son is 2 1/2 years old and about 6 months ago, he began to be constipated. After changing his diet, many trips & phone calls to the pediatrician, I took him to a pediatric GI doctor. The Dr put him on 1 square of Ex-Lax daily.
We did the follow-up over the summer and still was told to continue with it. He eats fruit and veggies are sparingly but I try to sneak it in when I can. He does experience cramping and the stool varies during the day and he can go numerous times per day.
The Dr. told me that it doesn't matter what he eats and that it is a very common problem with kids this age. Lately, I'm frustrated with the Ex-Lax and the constant pain that he goes through. He'll shake and want to hold my hand because it hurts. The last few times I've been to see the GI doc either by appt or via email, it's so short, sweet and very abrupt. Maybe he sees it 100 times a day but this is my 1 kid and I feel put off. And we need to do this till he's potty-trained, which is no time soon!
So I go for a second opinion and this GI doc says to increase it to 3 squares a day and that my son is really holding it in. I'm like WTH??? Really??
It seems excessive but there are kids on more than that a day (so I hear)
Am I crazy??? The new Dr says 6-8 weeks to re-train him not to hold it in (he won't have a choice) and then wean him off and go to other fiber sources like metamucil, etc.
Help!
Michele
My son is not on ex lax but ha a similar problem like your son.. in fact I was thinking of seeking a doctors opinion because I feel so horrible for him. And like your boy my sons diet is not horrible.. he is not to bad with the veggies and fruits and I even started giving him half a fiber bar but still has problems. I have been thinking he has just been holding it in, but I really dunno anymore and it can get frustrating for him and me because I dunno what what my poor boy is going thru. I couldnt even get him to go poo on the potty until June of this year. He still has issues with pooing in his pants too, because I guess it is easier for him to "start" standing up and then sit down. So he will get a lil in his pants and half the time never ends up finishing. I feel so sorry for my little man. Just thought you would like to know that someone is in a similar situtation.
Thanks for replying!
Maybe you should take your son to a GI doc. You don't want him learning to hold it in an stretch his rectal muscles leading to accidents as he ages. That what's I was told yesterday by the new GI doc. Like I needed to feel worse!
From what I hear, it is really common for toddlers to have constipation. He also has low tone, which, doesn't help.
Good luck with your son! I cringe every time I see him struggle but maybe our sons both need more of an intervention.
Keep in touch if you'd like.

Thanks... I was thinking about it and def will check out a doc now.
Have you tried miralax.... my 2 year old needs it. he was prescribed it. after i had taken him to er. because he had a near golf ball sized poo he passed and i was worried he may possibly get hemmorotds as a result of having such a hard time etc.
The mirilax helped and was a lil more gentle.
My son suffered from this problem, it was really bad for several years, changed doctors and he told us to give him a tablespoon of mineral oil every morning and guess what it worked. We gave it to him until he was five years old.
Try Miralax. Not sure what the dosage would be for a 2 year old but it doesn't have the cramping effect that ex-lax would. Exlax seems officaly harsh for a 2 year old.
My 2.5 yr. old daughter has similar tummy troubles. Our Dr. recommended Miralax. It's pretty gentel but I do notice that she has either LARGE stools or very wet stools. So I started switching her over to a more gentel fiber supplement and probiotics after much stress and research. It has been just recently so we'll see how it goes. I'll let you know. But you might go ahead and ask your Dr. about Miralax. It's not a laxative like exlax. Take care!

A tablespoon of Karo Syrup can work. Also, give them prunes to eat. Prune juice is gross, but regular prunes are pretty tasty.
I suffered from something similar when I was a small child.. I was never told that I held it in, rather I just had an issue, and I still to this day have some troubles if I don't watch what I eat... I have to eat high fiber...
As far as your child goes, if it hurts to push, he isn't going to push but rather just hold it in... So yes the 2nd opinion GI was right in telling you to up it where he will have no choice as harsh as that may seem, and he will see its ok to let it go... and as you wean him off of it, he will see that its ok!!! And you will have then gotten his system regulated, where he won't be so backed up..
Pediatricians (most) stopped telling parents to use suppositories as well, because just the same, it creates a "hurt" when insurting it, caused the child to "shut down" that "pain", causing more back up and blockage...
If you feel you are not getting the attention you need from your Dr, then express that feeling, tell him/her that you want more answers... As parents we get so frustrated with them not taking the time we feel we need, but on "my end" (I do medical billing) of it, we are charging for that time.. So speak up and tell him you have questions.. Go in with a list, and go down that list and do not feel bad.. If he spends an additional 30 mins with you... on top of the 30-60 min code he bills out... believe me... he has another code to charge your insurance for that extra time... He is not losing his money...
YOU are your childs best advocate, and you can't (not sayin that you do) let that MD status intimidate you to just trust what he is saying... PUSH for answers...
Good Luck mama!
