Won't go to sleep!

My boy is almost 3 years old and all of the sudden (about 3 days ago) he's decided he doesn't like his bed and doesn't want to go to bed.  He will scream and cry and constantly get out of bed.  The first night it was like he was scared and now I don't know what to think!  I left his closet light on with the door cracked, I've laid in his bed until he's fallen asleep.  That worked until midnight when he woke up and started crying and screaming for me.  The other night he came to my room at I don't know what time and cried at the side of my bed.  I'm out of ideas!  I would love ANY input or ideas with how to deal with this.  And he can't speak well, so I can't ask him what's wrong.  He's especially bad at putting words together when he's distressed so that's not an option.  Please give me advice, I'm open to all!

night terrors start around this age, so give him "Monster away" spray, which is just a spray bottle with water and maybe some added scented oil, maybe give him a flashlight and tell him monsters dont like the bright light, or a night light, or a big plush toy to stand guard by his bed, or try a full body massage to soothe him.

We told my son that monsters dont like the dark so they sleep when the son is down, and during the day they do volunteer work-ya its corny but its worked soo far and my son isnt that great wit words either. It will pass mama so dont get discouraged

I'm sure it's not night terrors because I've seen him have one, and I've seen a friend's daughter have them repeatedly.  I suppose he could be afraid of monsters.  We try not to watch anything like that when he's awake.  Leaving the light on doesn't work and when he sleeps in his sleeping bad next to my bed he doesn't ask for the light to be left on, so I'm not sure if he's scared of the dark at all.  But I will try to tell him monsters don't like the dark and some monster spray.  Thanks to you all.
