I am getting terribly frustrated with potty training my son. Let me start with the fact that we live my in laws. My son is 4 and I have been working a long time to get him potty trained. I wasnt being consistent for a while and that was part of the trouble. I started being consistent with it, offering rewards and lots of praise when he would go. We were making wonderful progress!!!! Then one day, the in laws start to....to put it nicely....complain about the accidents he is having *only 2 or 3 a day-and that wasnt everyday* they whined that it was ruining the carpet (even though we cleaned up after him right after taking him to the potty) so now he HAS to wear pullups and he wont go! The only reason we havent moved out of there is cuz we cant afford it on our own (roommate needed for that) and the friends of ours we are gonna live are an hour away and that is where we are moving to. My son is in preschool so we wanna stay where we are until he is done with school in May. I have tried putting underwear underneath his pullup, but it isnt working. I am taking him to the bathroom anytime he shows signs of needing to go and several times in between those. I just had a baby 3 months ago and it is getting expensive to buy diapers and pullups for 2 kids. I DESPERATELY want to get him potty trained but I dont know what to do! Somedays, I am ready to break down and just cry cuz this is so frustrating! Can someone please help me?
just a thought have you tried the plastic pants that can go on the outside?
i know we couldnt get my oldest newphew potty trained for the longest time and then when he was ready he just started going in the potty and his 2 year old brother decided he wanted to go in the pot too and within a week of the oldest deciding he was ready, both boys were potty trained.
I feel your pain...I have 4 year old twin boys...one is pee trained but WILL NOT go poo in the potty for anything. The other one won't do either in the potty. They turned 4 on Jan. 1st. It is so frustrating.....I never dreamed I would have 4 year olds that weren't potty trained. GRRRRRRRRRRR! I'm sorry you have to deal with in-laws on top of it. But try the plastic liners that go over the underwear...that way he'll still feel if he gets wet....but the plastic will contain the mess. I got the plastic lines at Target or Walmart...can't remember for sure. Good luck. I know your frustration!
I don't know if this will work for you, but I'll pass it along anyway. I'm having trouble with my 3.5 year old son too, and the only thing that has finally started showing some progress - he only wears Pull-ups at bedtime and when we are away from home - is keeping him naked! I don't know if your in-laws would appreciate that either but it's all that worked for us. He uses the potty every single time - no accidents as long as he's not wearing anything from the waist down. For the longest time, as soon as I put him in a Pull-up or underwear he would "use it" if you get my drift!
Finally - and Hallelujah! - he is starting to tell me he has to go potty even if he's wearing a Pull-up. He also gets a small treat when he poops, like a Starburst or something, and he's finally realized that if he just puts that poop in the potty he will get candy! Maybe you could just try it for a weekend and see where that takes you and if it's worth continuing. Good luck!
