You just made my night! The Geography major in me finds this way too exciting!!! Now I'm thinking of all the choropleth maps I could make based off the new census data and then compare it to maps I've already made from the previous census data. Yep...I'm a dork.

Looking more at that map, I can understand and explain the decline along the Mississippi river and delta but what is up with the midwest? I'm not overly familiar with the economics or demographics of that area. I can only assume it has to do with the decline in family farming.

I was wondering the same thing.  Not being from the midwest and not knowing anyone (is Ohio midwest?  Mom always called it "Back East.") in that neck of the woods, I haven't a clue what is going on.

What I do know is North Dakota has been referred to as a sort of "Wild West" these days.  The amount of people pouring into that state is staggering.  Homes are not to be found, and impromptu trailer housing is popping up trying to accomodate those who have come for the jobs.  (All this happened after the Census and isn't shown.)

I spent quite some time studying that map and thought there may be a few here who would appreciate it!  LoL

Ohio is considered midwest- East North Central (aka Great Lake states). Modern thought tends to link the term midwest to Missouri, Kansas, etc..... which is also the way I think of it because that's what we referred to as the midwest. The truth is that historically the midwest was anything east of the Missippi, west of the Appalachians, and north of the Ohio River. It wasn't until later that the states we now think of as midwest were included under the name.

For the life of me, I can't get it straight in my head that the midwest is also east of the mississippi.

No kidding!  When you said, "...anything east of the Mississippi", I was scratching my head over who thought that made sense.  :)
