Thanks to the recommendation of someone on this group, I have been reading The Urban Homestead, Your Guide to Self-Sufficient Living in the Heart of the City.  It has all the standard recommedations and how-tos of starting up a homestead such as composting, bread making, natural cleaners, generating your own power, etc.  But then it also goes into how to garden in very limited spaces, how to raise small livestock in the city, foraging including dumpster diving, and bicycling for transportation.  This book even has reocmmendations for those who live in apartments.  The book is well written, broken down into very specific sections so it is very easy to reference exactly what you need, and is lighthearted, making it a very enjoyable read.  I found the copy I am reading at the library, but it's going on my wish to buy a copy of my own.  It is a perfect book for me and others who are just starting up in the homesteading lifestyle.

This book is incredible! It's on my wishlist, too. It has real life advice such as "chicken poop attracts flies" Something that not everyone (in the city) who is considering getting chickens knows. haha

I enjoyed reading this one too, but probably won't add it to my home library.  Unless I found it cheap somewhere!  I might have been the one that posted it before this forum was created, cuz I saw nothing here from me and I KNOW I recommended it SOMEWHERE.  :-)  Memory is slipping!

That sums it up so much for our family.  If I had the twenty dollars to buy it when we first started our urban homesteading this book would have been awesome.  The library had over a hundred holds, so it wasn't one we were able to read right away.  At this point, we are past it.  However, it is a great resource for starting and getting general ideas.

I need to get this book!  We live in the city, with rural ideals :)
