Looking for advice on military housing or areas to rent in Norfolk/Virginia Beach Area???
Will be moving to VA in December from HI...I feel lost already and we are not even there yet. I am looking for advice on good schools, and housing areas....Please if anyone has any suggestions I would love to read them!! Very desperate about not knowing anything, about VA! Aside from that we are very excited for the change!!!
your going to get a lot of advice on this one as to where NOT to live! lol. i see that you posted this almost a week ago. so if you are still looking for some suggestions feel free to send me a message. i just bought a house and explored many areas lol. i would be willing to help you with that. i just dont want to write it all out if you already found a place lol
I would suggest staying off military housing if you can help it. If only for financial reasons, depending of course on rank and BAH....our BAH is about 1400 a month, our apartment is 1040 a month, water is 70, electric is 80, rent insurance is 10, so we still have an extra 200 a month left over from BAH :)
That being said, we live in the Runaway Bay apartments in Virginia Beach and I love this area. We're very close to the beach (about 15-20 minutes) and all the shopping you could ever need is no more than 15 minutes away, and we're pretty much in the center of all the bases.
The only thing I haven't like about Virginia so far is how much people complain about it. I don't understand why everyone feels the need to complain. It's a lovely area, and if you really get out there and enjoy it, it's fun!
Hi!! Thank you so much for responding to my post.. We have not found anything yet. I am not sure what area to live in or not to live in. Or where to send my oldest to school. I will take any type of advice that you have!! So yes please let me know!!
Thank you
Kari
I agree, everyone complains about how they dont like it etc etc. I dont know what is not to like..in va beach at least. THe beach is right there, plenty of things to do once you get out. Anyway, I live in Chapel Lake Apts and just renewed my lease for the 3rd time and have no complaints. 3 bed 2 bath 1600 sq ft and payin $1100. Also when you're looking for apts, ask about the military rate, they usually have a cheaper rate. Not much cheaper but $50-$100 cheaper.

It all depends on your personal taste. They do have new housing being bulit. I'm not sure the waiting list.
There is plenty to do and the weather is nothing like what you have but it's still beautiful
Good luck on your move!
Hey I grew up in this area, and I still love it! But if your looking to rent be careful with the Breeden company... They are not so good with, well, to be honest, anything.
We have been living at East Summer Station apartments for a month now. So far so good. It's a 3 bedroom 2 bath apartment we are paying 1090 a month, $90 for electric, and we have yet to get our first water bill. The apartment we our living in is really nice compared to the base housing they had in Goose Creek, South Carolina. lol. The only bad thing about living here is that some resident park in the visitor parking spots which really bothers me.
