When you're son is three and you go to the zoo and see animals having sex?  Too young yet?

I would tell him that the animals were expressing their love for each other just like when mommy & daddy kiss & leave it at that.

I say too young for the sex talk.  It would just lead him to wanting to explore his own sexuality.  And I think 3 is too young for that.  I'd say, "they're playing" and quickly move on.

It depends on how much he asks about it and on how mature he is for a three year old. If he asks questions, or was very insistent on knowing exactly what was happening, then the best answer is probably along the lines of,
"You know how Daddy helped me make your baby brother, and he's growing in my tummy? That was the daddy (Whatever it was animal) helping the mommy (whatever it was animal) do the same thing. That is how they do it." It is enough for some kids. A slight variation helped my kids. Good luck!
