Hi! I know it's been years since I had my kids, but you really never forget. Anyway, with my first, my water broke. Actually, it felt like I had to go pee really badly and then it just kinda gushed out.
With my second, I had a backache that would not go away. I went to bed, cause it was late, and then got up cause I couldn't sleep and then paced, sat, got up and paced some more, did it a couple more times, so that my husband starting timing them. I was getting up every 3 minutes to pace.
Call the maternity unit and speak with one of the nurses. Let her know the frequency and duration of the contractions (cramps) and how strong they are and ask her opinion. Since they will be the ones checking on you til it's time to deliver the baby, she will have a pretty good idea of how far into labor you are and if you should head in or wait a while longer. Any bleeding head straight in.
The boss will deal with the problem. My son's boss didn't want to let him go either (cause so many people called out of work that night), but one of the women in the office yelled at him and told him it wasn't my son's problem as to who did not show up for work...he had to leave.
Good luck and keep us posted!
