My dd will be 3 in two weeks. Yesterday I went to the curriculum store that is across the street. A lot of the worksheets in some of the books that I got require the child know how to trace and cut. Does anyone have any ideas on what I can do to get my dd to understand what that means?

Oh LORD, You have searched me and you know me.  You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar.  You are discern with my going out and my laying down; you are familiar with all my ways.  Psalm 139:1-3

  • My daughter is almost 3 also!  She too is starting to cut with scissors.  She makes fringes on index cards (which is what we had laying around at the time, otherwise she probably would have just used regular paper).  She likes to make a cut and then use that as a starting point for tearing.

Oftentimes she sees me cutting out stuff and wants to cut too.  I didn't let her use real scissors at first.  I gave her some "pretend" scissors from her doctor kit so she could pretend holding them without cutting herself.  Once she got a firm grip on those play scissors I let her use her blunt, preschool scissors and she pretty much went on auto-pilot from there.  It takes some time to get used to scissors, so my suggestion would be just to let your little one sit there and have little "scissors sessions" from time to time.  My daughter really liked having the privilege of using real scissors and stayed occupied for a nice long while :).

We're not doing tracing just yet.  I'm going to keep an eye out for updates to this post because I am curious myself!

  • When Emmi first started she practiced cutting on whatever scrap paper and once she got the hang of cutting the paper and could go all the way across we bought a cut, color, glue book. she can cut out the pictures they have and the lines are thick so they can learn to stay on the lines while they are learning and then she can color too. some of them you glue on so we got a glue stick and some of them just stick on when you peel away the paper strip. I think we got it as walmart. it was a start for us and she enjoys it a lot.

  • I got DD a some pre-school scissors that only cut paper.  She cuts stuff out of old magazines and will cut out shapes for collages and stuff like that.  I just trace the shapes onto coloured construction paper or sometimes likes to just cut freehand.   I read somewhere that they start off by tearing bits of paper like the other mum said?   I had her cut together with me using the big scissors (my hand over hers) then she moved on to her own pair...
