My daughter is almost 4 and I would like to teach her lessons that get her ready for kindergarton. But then I thought what do they teach the first year in kindergarton? I have no idea anymore.
I just posted in another group - "What does a Pre-school" Screen entail. I have an appointment for my kiddos tomorrow to have a screen. Anyhow to answer your question I've found a few Kindergarten Readiness Checklists. IF you look its not all about 1-2-3's or ABC's it's following directions and attention span.I've added a few links- hope they help!

- Pay attention for short periods of time to adult-directed tasks
- Understand actions have both causes and effects
- Show understanding of general times of day
- Cut with scissors
- Trace basic shapes
- Begin to share with others
- Start to follow rules
- Be able to recognize authority
- Manage bathroom needs
- Button shirts, pants, coats, and zip up zippers
- Begin to control oneself
- Separate from parents without being upset
- Speak understandably
- Talk in complete sentences of five to six words
- Look at pictures and then tell stories
- Identify rhyming words
- Identify the beginning sound of some words
- Identify some alphabet letters
- Recognize some common sight words like "stop"
- Sort similar objects by color, size, and shape
- Recognize groups of one, two, three, four, and five objects
- Count to ten
- Bounce a ball
That's a wonderful list. What a good resource! But I'd like to add that that is what the schools would LIKE to see for kindergarten readiness. At least half the kids I've met entering kindergarten would fail that list. And what the schools expect from a kindergartner varies greatly from school system and state. Some schools expect a child finishing kindergarten to KNOW 13 letters of the alphabet and be able to read any three or four letter word those thirteen letters can spell, or they "fail". Some schools are happy if the kid ATTENDED kindergarten.
But for a place to start, that list should be very helpful for the mom who posted the question. I just didn't want her to feel overwhelmed by it.

Thank you I have been doing some workbooks with her and definitly need to look at all these resources. Thanks!
Oooh I'm excited for that list!! I asked one of the school teachers around here what they expect for kids to be at for kindergarten and she told us they didn't really have expectations because most things are taught in kindergarten. But she told us what they were prefer the kids to know...so we're working on that list until the kids go to school!
