We hear about the horrific stories of the elderly population being abused and it should never never happen in a million years. I'm not condoning elder abuse in anyway. On Nancy Grace the other night I cried my eyes out when they showed a bed ridden man getting a horrible beating from his care giver and other people being abused. Which those people should be beaten themselves, left to sit in their own piss and shit and not given anything to eat for days at a time. But something you don't hear about is the abuse the CNA's and Nurses have to take from the elder residents they take care of. Being a CNA I have been beaten, bitten, spit on, hair pulled, tripped, scratched, kicked, punched in the face and everywhere else, chased down(old people can still move quick when they want too) had urine and feces thrown at me and smeared on me, be called every name in the book and all the while have to keep a smile on my face and continue as if nothing is going on. At the facility I work at we aren't even allowed to tell them to stop, or please don't that hurts.....nothing, we are to take it. i joined the healthcare field because I wanted to help the aging population.....but instead my co-workers and I and others in the healthcare field are abused and unheard because it's not important enough....it's what we get paid the big bucks for right? Contrary to popular belief.....CNA's make next to nothing, we should get but don't get combat pay. And not all the residents that are abusive have a mental illness or in a lot of pain....they are just mean to be mean because they can be. Some of the families can be just as abusive. Why don't I just quit? Who else is going to care for these people? If I quit the next person they put in to care for these residents could be a possible abuser. I have met some of the sweetest, kindest elderly men and women you could ever hope to meet. It's those residents that keep me going and coming back for more. And I find it an honor after a resident takes their last breath to give care to them one more time, bathe and lotion and just talk to them, let them know how much they are loved and cared for.
I work the night shift 11pm to 7am and just to clear up one more thing....OLD PEOPLE DO NOT SLEEP AT NIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ever wonder why a loved one is sleeping when you go in to visit? It's because they were up all night asking for their tissues to be moved an inch to the left and remote an inch to the right....lol
Anyway, just wanted to put out there that Elder Abuse isn't just care givers abusing the residents.....It's often times its the Elderly who is doing the abusing.
