If we were to take a trip to Orlando, what are the perks of staying in one of the Disney hotels vs staying in a hotel off site? Which do you prefer?
I like staying at Disney hotels (even in Disneyland) because they seem to cater to the guests better. You get the magic hours, and everything is all right there. You dont have to drive, (disneyland). One of the hotels in DL I believe its The Disneyland Hotel you have Goofy or another character there to welcome you into the hotel. I cant answer about WDW but Im sure someone else can.
Extra magic hours, having the option of the dining plan, Disney's Magical Express makes it so you don't have to rent a car, and best of all you are 100% submersed in everything Disney. Staying on property is so much more magical!
I've done both, and now that we've stayed on property we'll never stay off property again. Between the Extra Magic Hours and dining plan (mentioned above :) ) and free parking at the parks each day (if you have a car there), being able to ship your purchases back to your hotel and NOT have to lug them around with you .. You're close to the parks and other Disney sites, and their hotels are so much fun!
Unless you have an incredible deal like we did on our honeymoon ($30 a night for a suite for two weeks) then stay on property. If you didn't have to leave Disney when leaving the parks, why would you?

We also do other things, but I usually plan those at the beginning of the trip, and we stay a few days at a different Hotel. We have stayed at the nick jr Hotel before, but was not impressed.
We personally just like staying ON Disney property, part of the magic for us.
Well it has the obvious perks as mentioned above, and we have only been twice and stayed on proprtey both times but as my husband says it is the magic of it all. For some people they would rather save the money and stay somewhere else. However for us personally that would be like going to the movies and not having money for popcorn. There is just something special about the whole atmosphere.
On site. A lot of time is spent travelling. We also enjoyed the magic hours.
I too have to say it's all or nothing for me too. In 2000 we went up to WDW for the 1st time in years and got a room by DTD and it was not to bad we had a bus that would drop off and pick you up at the park. After that it was at a Disney and that was it for years now my mom and dad are DVCM:)
I agree. Not having to rent a car would be a big bonus for me.
