I started making homemade laundry detergent because of everyone talking about how much cheaper it is. and posted how much it cost. then i started seeing it all over the place as wells so i was like hey they did the math. i'm sure they are right. i didn't check into it at all.
Lately i got to thinking about it because i'm having to make a batch every week. 1 cup borax and washing soda and 1 bar laundry soap. then i was looking the soap cost $1 a bar. started thinking well maybe it's not so much cheaper after all.
i got to figuring. it's 9.5 cups in a box of borax and 6.8 cups in a box of washing soda. it's costing me roughly $8 for 36 loads of laundry. when i can go to the local sams club and pay $14 for 252 loads of ecos. I'm not thinking this is so much of a better thing after all.
I'm paying more for to make my own laundry detergent. my clothes are dingy. and i had to double up the "recommended" amount to get the smell out of them. it's really getting me to second guess the whole homemade cleaners thing. i've already put back my all purpose cleaner vecause it left a kind of sticky not so clean feel on stuff.
so now i'm back to what in the world to do and believe.
Quoting SusanTheWriter:I think homemade is worth it for some things, but honestly, modern chemistry is awesome at other stuff.
I have to agree. We have made some amazing progress in chemistry, medicine and cooking, I think people just need to be careful. If you look at a craft book from the 50's it has some good ideas but those moms had nothin on some of the crafters today. In this case, laundry detergent is the better choice, toothpaste too I think, but when it comes to a cough, I will take peppermint tea, and I love love love my homemade apple sauce and apple butter.
Awesome! Mind Sharing the Recipe? I am always looking for a good way to save with out compromising quality.
