Why your skin care therapist does not have the answers?

You go to a beauty therapist because they are supposedly knowledgeable about skin and your want a skin condition fixed or improved.  There is also the reason of relaxation which I must say is absolutely divine as well.  Wish I did it more often.  But how much do they know?

Ella Bache recently in Australia was doing a marketing campagin with regards "A new skin in 28 days".  The premise of this add is that it was thought that the skin renewed itself every 28 days.  Most people who sell skincare who are consultants are also told this misinformation as well.  This information is from research that was done 30 years ago and nobody has bothered to update their knowledge.  Now if you are a consultant this is not your fault.  You only get told information from the company who trains you.

I want you to think about this question.  Would you allow a heart surgeon to operate on you if they did not understand the anatomy and physiology of your heart?

I don't know about you but I would not.  Yet in reality this is what we are doing.  Many therapists do not update their knowledge nor do can they link ingredients to skin funciton.  If they could there would be a massive reduction in the amount of acne adults are suffering from.  30% of adult acne is from cosmetics.  You would also get a result fairly quickly because the cosmetics prescribed for the skin would actually do something to it.

So how often does the skin turn over?  Well there are numerous cells in the skin and they all turnover at different rates.  The keratinocyte which is the cell we exfoliate off on a regular basis however is 10-14 days.  So ideally in a perfect world if we all had sufficient money we should have a facial every 10-14 days.

Oh well girls I can keep on dreaming for that one.  That would be divine a facial every 2 weeks.

P.S. I don't normally provide references but I have so you know that I actually know what I am talking about.
