Did I do the right thing?

Hi! I'm having a struggle within myself and I would like some in-put on whether or not others feel I did the right thing... My ex told me that he was going to handcuff me to a chair and make me watch him and his new girlfriend have sex so that I could see how happy he is now and then he told me that he was going to slit my throat. He's made other threats of this nature in the past and has told me in detail how he would torture me and any guy that I ever brought around our son. Yesterday I went and filed for an order of protection and was granted it. He is not aloud anywhere around our son or myself or our home for the next year. The struggle I'm having is whether I did the wrong thing by filing the order of protection. I am fearful of him and what he might do to me, but he's still my son's father and I just deprived him of a year of time to spend with his dad. I think I only feel this way because he pretty much has me convinced that everything he does is somehow my fault so I'm trying to ignore that feeling and just tell myself that I did the right thing, but I'd really like some in-put -Aimee

I think you TOTALLY did the right thing.  Your son is better off not being around someone who has thoughts and actions such as his father.  You need to protect yourself and your son and you took a good first step to do so.  I hope for you that you have a safe place to go should you feel threatened.

Please don't doubt yourself any further.  Stay strong in your stance.  Hang in there and good luck.

I think that there is very little considered wrong when you're protecting your own children.  Even if it is from their own parents.  YOu did the right thing, and I hope that you have the strength in your heart and mind to keep the order active through the hold year, and however long you might need it afterwards.
