Dentist, sedation, papoose board. Help!

Quick question: The dentist whom we saw for the first time today told us that we can not go into the room while our son is partially sedated and on a papoose board to get his teeth cleaned.

What are the laws allowing/not allowing parents into the room while a special needs child has a teeth cleaning. I hate the idea of not standing by my 6 year old's side to comfort him.

Do I stand a chance at fighting this?

Please help me,

Tiffany

just tell them that you are going in- and if they still say no, go to someone else. I went in the first couple of times with both my girls. I have never had one tell me no.  now it isn't a big deal for my youngest to go in by herself.

My autistic child had me, my husband, or his Nana with him at the dentist and we were not told no. I would go elsewhere if they refused to let you go in with your child.

I would look for a dentist who has experience with children with autism.  Our dentist is wonderful.  He lets us go in with our son and even let's me sit in the chair and hold him while his teeth are being cleaned (and he is 5 and 1/2).  He will stop and wait for a minute if my son seems to be scared and he praises him when he is doing well and acknowledges when he appears scared.  His dentist is wonderful.  I had to search for him and had to ask when checking out dentists if he had experience with children with autism because it was not stated on their website, but he has years of experience with them.  I would definately find another dentist.  There should be no reason for them not to let you back there.
