My daughter is 5 ( will be 6 in July of 2009 ). She's been diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome, Sensory Prossesing Disorder, R/O Mood Disorder, and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder ( last DX is from an abusive bio-dad ). She has been diagnosed since she was 2 1/2. Okay, before I ask, PLEASE can we not turn this into a medicine debate? Pretty PLEASE, lol!!!

She is on a number of medications because before them she would hit/ bite herself, pull her hair out. Hit other people when she was scared and they approached her. She would hide in corners, under beds. Anyway Along with PT, OT, and pragmatic speech therapy, she takes Risperdal, Clonidine, and Valium. She has been VERY stable for along time like this but is now starting to become somewhat depressed and irritated again. I've been looking into Music Therapy... Anyone tried that before? I should mention that my daughter is VERY intelligent, the "weakest" part of her disorder right now is the sensory prossesing.

So I guess My question is, does anyone have any recommendations? I don't want to go "up" on her meds. anymore. Has anyone had better results with different medication? She's on 3mg of Risperdal a day right now. I know thats a lot but when we started it was 0.25 mg once a day and went up from there. And she's VERY tall for her age. ( She's 4'2" and weighs 63lbs)

Thanks in advance

What does she have for a sensory diet?

What are her interests? Does she have any special ones? Her favorites?

Some type of music therapy would be nice. I've heard of others with such children doing the same. If she seems really interested in listening and maybe even learning how to play an instrument, it would not hurt to try.
I was thinking of putting my daughter in a dance class to help her weight issues, increase self confidence and become more social, even though she is friendly.

Good luck!

She also may enjoy art therapy.  (Unless tactile defensive)  But, Art and Music therapies are wonderful for children to help them regulate emotions.  Dance also is very good with music too.

As for the meds,  I am not sure where you live, but Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland is an excellent place to take children with complicated medical, developmental and behavioral problems ( search Kennedy Kreiger Institute and Johns Hopkins for exact dept to assist you)  I know that families travel worldwide for their expertise.

Good luck!
