Welcome to Autism Resources.  Thanks for joining.  It is my hope that this group will be filled with all sorts of resources that will benefit parents and professionals all over.  Think of it as a one-stop resource center.  When searching a particular therapy or issue that pertains to autism, come here and check out the sections for a resource to assist you.  Share all those favorite sites you visit to help prepare for IEPs, learn about therapies, etc here in the appropriate section.

Comments and suggestions are welcome.  Please contact me - my id is autismfamily.

I have two boys on the spectrum, ages 11 and 12.  Matt is 11 and nonverbal, not toilet trained, on Geodon, has an aide at school, gets floortime and feeding therapy in the home, at school has Adaptive PE, SLP and OT.  He has sensory issues also and uses a seat cushion at school, a cheap talk communication device and intellikeys for the keyboard at the computer.

Nick is 12, HFA and is being homeschooled through California Virtual Academy.  He loves cats and reading and drawing.  He wants to create his own cat sanctuary.  He is in the sixth grade.

I am the home health care worker for Matt.  They both attend a summer autism daycamp.  I am a member of the Autism Society of America and subscribe to many autism related publications.  I run a yahoo group MakingPECSCards and write at my site that is located under my signature.  I also like to watch GH and Y&R.

Actually I am the group owner.  My younger son Matthew is on Geodon, an antipsychotic.  Been for a few years now and before this it was Risperdal, but when we upped the dosage the side effects started so we quickly switched.

Without meds my son had PICA, eating nonedible items like dirt, tree bark, picking at the paint on walls.  He also took hours to go to sleep and he was malnourished and needed to gain weight.  He has been in feeding therapy for many years and the Dev Ped there started the meds back in 03.

  • hi, my name is Gina and I am just glad to join all groups that is dealing with autism. Since I am a new mom dealing with this because my child had just recently been diagnose with Autism Spectrum Disorder and he is a high functioning too. So that leads into more problems because he looks so normal until his has is outbursts or when you talk to him and you can tell he is not the age he should be (which is 8). It can be very frustrating when other parents see him and when he has his moments no one does not understand that it is hard talking to him and you can see the looks. Plus my hubby and I tend to argue on how we should discipline him, especially since we have a 2 year old and we want to treat them the same. So I am here not just to understand more about it but to get info from other parents about other sites I can look at whether it is medical or educational. And of course learn from other parents about parenting issues. So I am just glad to have join as many groups that I can get myself into. Thank goodness, because I was starting to worry if I will have problems finding parents like me!!!

    always, Gina

  • Thank you for the group.  My son, 17, has Asperger's and is a senior in high school.  It has been a long tough road for him and our family.  There is so much to learn still and he is getting ready to venture out on his own and this worries me.  Thank you for the group and I hope to learn a lot from it and contribute what I can to it as well!

  • Hi everyone, My name is Kim and I am from Indiana. I have a wonderful 14 year old son with low functioning autism.  Unfortunatlly we are gong through very hard stretch right now as we prepare to have Evan moved into a residential home on the 15th due to his aggressive behaviors and the schools inability to handle him and provide a safe environment for him.  This is the most difficult thing I have ever faced and I am struggling at this time just to make it through the day.  Hoping I can gain some info from others as well as give some help when needed.  Kim

  • Hi. My name is Christi. I am 27 and live in South Dakota (FYI: NOT the best place to live when you have an ASD child!) Anywho, I am the mother of 3 beautiful and special children. Jacob is 8 and has been diagnosed with high functioning autism, ADHD, and sensory integration dysfunction. Caitlyn is 6, and my stepdaughter Brenna is 2, both of whom are NT.
I work as a pediatric nurse. I love my job, but would love even more to be a SAHM. Ever since Jacob was diagnosed, in August of this year, I have been reading everything I can get my hands on about autism, so I have learned a LOT. I am trying the things I feel may work best for my son and our family. There is more I would like to do, just don't have the resources around here to do so.

  • "Hi" - My name is Christine and I'm here for all the same reasons as what's been said already.  My son is in 7th grade and has had difficulty with learning developments since birth.  He was diagnosed last year with AS and unfortunately, school officials have not been the best of help.  So, I'm reaching out to those who have been there and can give me all kinds of advice and support as to how I can help support my son in the direction of success!

Although, I also work with LS kiddos, I find there is always something I can be learning and why not be taught by the experts!!'

Wishing you all a Happy Thanksgiving with family and friends.  Look forward to staying in touch.

    Hugs,
    Christine

  • Hi!  My name is Vicki and I am a single mom of a beautiful 7 year old daughter who is PDD-NOS.  We live in a rural area in Upstate NY and even though we live in a remote area, I am thankful for the resources which are available to me & my daughter.

Cassidy is in a regular 2nd grade classroom with a small group of children, some on the spectrum.  There is another class like hers.  Both classrooms share a special ed teacher for half a day.  There are aides available for the children for assistance as needed.  We've been lucky that some of these aides have been with these kids since pre-K so they are very familiar with Cassidy and some of her ASD classmates.  Cassidy receives Speech, OT, and we're in the process of getting APE.  She also receives additional support for English and math.

She loves to play with small manipulatives such as the Littlest Pet Shop animals and Polly Pocket.  She loves stuffed animals of all kinds, especially mommy & baby pairs.  Recently she has shown an interest in playing on the computer on web sites such as WebKinz and the Littlest Pet Shop VIP animals.  Also Nick Jr, Nickelodeon, Barbie & Polly Pocket.

Thank you for this site.  I look forward to learning more!
