Welcome to Autism Resources.  Thanks for joining.  It is my hope that this group will be filled with all sorts of resources that will benefit parents and professionals all over.  Think of it as a one-stop resource center.  When searching a particular therapy or issue that pertains to autism, come here and check out the sections for a resource to assist you.  Share all those favorite sites you visit to help prepare for IEPs, learn about therapies, etc here in the appropriate section.

Comments and suggestions are welcome.  Please contact me - my id is autismfamily.

I have two boys on the spectrum, ages 11 and 12.  Matt is 11 and nonverbal, not toilet trained, on Geodon, has an aide at school, gets floortime and feeding therapy in the home, at school has Adaptive PE, SLP and OT.  He has sensory issues also and uses a seat cushion at school, a cheap talk communication device and intellikeys for the keyboard at the computer.

Nick is 12, HFA and is being homeschooled through California Virtual Academy.  He loves cats and reading and drawing.  He wants to create his own cat sanctuary.  He is in the sixth grade.

I am the home health care worker for Matt.  They both attend a summer autism daycamp.  I am a member of the Autism Society of America and subscribe to many autism related publications.  I run a yahoo group MakingPECSCards and write at my site that is located under my signature.  I also like to watch GH and Y&R.

  • Hello to all.  My name is Lisa and I live in Maine.  I have two special needs boys, ages 8 and 9. They both have Autism, and the youngest also has SPD, although he hasn't been "officially" diagnosed with it.  I am divorced, and my ex hasn't had ANY contact with the boys in almost a year, so I've been doing this totally on my own.

I have always been a big advocate for my children, and make sure they are receiving the services and resources they need.  I'm tired of special needs children being viewed with such a stigma, and as another parent put it, "walking in the dark" to try and gain more information about Autism.  I'm VERY proud of my boys, and do not hide that they have special needs.

I'm looking forward to networking with other moms dealing with the same issues that I am!

  • HI I'm Crystal, I have four kids. My third has just been diagnosed wiht high functioning autism, he's 5. He starts kindergarten this year and I am very unsure. I've never dealt or been around autistic kids before. I know that he is still my lil boy but I also know that when he has his meltdowns I feel totally helpless and pretty bad that there's not much I can do. I am glad to have foudn this group. I'm hoping for some tips or advice. I'm open for anything.

  • Hey everyone!

I'm a SAHM of two wonderful little boys.  My oldest is 7 and my youngest is 4.  My 4 yr old is autistic .I am very fortunate to live in a great school district that has a wonderful special needs pre k program and it has done wonders!  I spend most of my day working as an advocate for Autism Speaks/Votes. I also work hard to keep up with a neverending pile of laundry!

I'm so happy to be here to get a chance to be around grown ups!!

    Blessings,

    Kristy

  • Hi! My name is Amy and I have a 28 month old son who has been officially diagnosed as having autism disorder, but it is "provisional"...which is confusing as it sounds like it is a temporary diagnosis.

I was told 1.5 months ago that he was delayed in speech and showing behavior that was "leaning toward" possible pdd-nos or asperger's syndrome and ultimately he was niether and we are now being told it IS autism spectrum disorder, but provisional.

I guess I'm confused cuz i thought the first two were one of many different "spectrums" of Autism and I was expecting him to be diagnosed in a specific level or spectrum.  They said it was going to be confusing and they were not lying about that!!  :)

Anyway, I have always found it easier to understand things or get advice/info in layman terms from other moms in relation to raising a child. So I am hoping to get that same thing here from moms who are already on this complex journey or even the newbies who are a few steps ahead of me on this path in the world of AUTISM and in turn pay it foward myself.

Any info explaining the diagnosis part or directing me to a place to get the info will be very much appreciated!!

I have been up and down the internet and I am running out of ideas. I mean, of course, we go out to eat, movies, shopping, lots of walking, swimming at the local motel.  I have checked all the websites for ARC and Special Olympics but they werent very helpful. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.  BTW..we are in NE PA.

    Thanks,

    Kathy

You also have a daughter and grandson on the spectrum. :)

Honestly, it sounds like they're doing a great deal with him. He's being stimulated without being overstimulated. I know it's hard to find places to go during the winter, and places like the mall can be a sensory nightmare.

What about some at home activities? Do you think he'd enjoy board games? In the spring or summer, activities like fairs (in non peek hours) might be nice for him. You'll have to just keep an eye on him to see whether or not he's overwhelmed by it. Also, attractions like Quiet Valley might be interesting. Again, I don't know his interests, so this might bore him, or he'll be indifferent.

From all that I've heard, it sounds like you're doing a fantastic job with him. :)

  • Gee, of all the people on here I get a reply from my daughter! LOL

I do believe we are all doing a great job with him but..we cant satisfy his mother!  I spent hours on the internet yesterday trying to come up with ideas. His mother wants him to have a schedule everyday but  there are times he just doesnt feel like doing anything and we cant force him. I just think she needs to back off a little bit and let him make his own decisions.

    Thanks Jen...Love ya,

Does he have SID? I know it often goes hand in hand with Autism, but not always. If he does,  I think she needs to relax.

Oh, what about arts and crafts? Get a bunch of supplies from AC Moore. It's fun at any age. In fact, typing that, now I want to go. lol

    Love ya too!
