Like the idea, but don't want to spend the money? There are two different ways of making your own...
What I did:
Take a hanging planter and remove the water drain plate, if there is one. Make one of the drain holes big enough to put the main plant stalk through. Fill up the planter halfway, and make sure the bottom 1/3 of the stalk is packed in soil. Fill up the remainder. The benefit of this way is that you can plant stuff on the top part of the planter, too. This is what it looks like:

The other (cheaper) way is with a 2-liter soda bottle or a gallon vinegar bottle. You cut the top off and invert it, pushing the plant through that so the roots are inside.
The instructions for both ways are at this website:

Since neither WalMart or King Soopers had the actual planters, I improvised, and I think it turned out rather well.
Enjoy! :)
Fantastic! I did the same thing, didnt want to spend the money on a baggie.... I also took some 5 gal buckets and did the same with cucumbers!
Wow I really wanted to try it, but didn't want to pay the money for it!! I will have to try the soda bottle (we got one of those, but no hanging baskets) Thanks!!!

This is awesome!! SOOO glad I didn't waste my money on one of the topsy turvy's today...I'm heading to the garden center tomorrow to get my materials to make my own! I'm so excited!
great idea and i just happen to have 3 of those planters. I was replanting some plants at 3am this morning lol. well car had issues on the way to wrk so had it towed home and went out and enjoyed the breeze and night air alone before everyone else got up. In doing that i freed up 3 hanging baskets. I will have to go and get me a tomatoe plant or i have some potatoes growing eyes in teh house. I will plant one of those and see how wrks. Seen Strawberries the same way.

Over the weekend I made 4 upside down mater plants. I used a gallon milk jug, 2 planters and a clear plastic drink pitcher. All turned out great!
i've got an empty hanging basket that will be transformed this weekend. thanks!
